but no cigar.....

Our opening morning was mostly steady rain all morning.... from daylight to noon.... We started out in the blind with sprinlkes, but the hard rain soon set in and we were getting wet... decided to head back to the truck to wait it out.... by noon we decided to call it a day. Slept in Sunday and done some yard work.... as there is plenty of season left to go....

On a spur of the moment idea, we went out yesterday afternoon after work to take advantage of the great weather. Hiked out to a spot I know of from past hunting.... seen a couple of hens run through the woods about 150-200 yards away.... Eased on up the old roadbed and decided to use the box call.

I yelped a few times, then cutt, then excited yelped.... Mrs. G whispered RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF US!!! I said a gobbler!?!? She says yes and he is blown up and strutting... I still couldn't see him yet... they were being tight beaked too!! I finally see him coming through the thicker brush.... wait until he gets behind a tree and we sit down in the roadbed. Pretty soon one gobbler becomes TWO.... I was thinking about a possible double. They split to where one went towards the left and one to the right.

The one going left was looking for the hen and when he didn't see her, went back to the right to join his buddy. I wanted Mrs. G. to have the first shot.... when I had a clear view, she didn't.... when she had a clear shot I couldn't see him and didn't think she could either. I was hoping he would come a little closer just to be sure....

Well I held her off too long and he made his way farther right instead of coming closer and there was no shot.... at all. They eventually went on off into the thick woods not to be seen again. I know hindsight is 20/20 and I should have just let her shoot, she said she had a clear shot at one point. I just wanted to be sure of the distance and got yard greedy. After standing up and looking it over, he was within range.

But she got the rush and was breathing heavy/shaking from the time she first saw them until they left.... We got to share some time in the woods together and atleast we saw something during the hunt. Oh, she has not stopped letting me know I should have just let her take the shot.... she had a clear shot and was on him!!

At least you didn't get busted like me yesterday... Sounds like a good hunt, hope you kill one next time

What's the saying a gobbler in the hand is better than 2 strutting off in the brush...

Just messing with you! Next time y'all will get them...

The double would have been a nice bonus.... but in no way was I holding out for that. Just a clear shot, in range for her....

When trying to judge the distance, vegitation, trees, and terrain can play tricks on a persons eyes at times and that is what happened yesterday.... I really should have just told her to take the shot when she had it.... :(

Hindsight is the clearest EVER when it comes to turkey hunting. The "what if's", "I should have's", and "If I's" are SUPER clear after blowing it. Ive replayed what I SHOULD have done Sunday over and over. In the end I left without a bird.

ditto that, I haven't even watched the video of the miss from Saturday and keep thinking how I should have shot before getting busted on Monday.

Even though the trigger wasn't tripped, sounds like a pretty successful hunt to me. Got to share time in the woods with somebody you care about, a good show, and a adrenaline rush. Short of actually carrying him out it don't get much better than that.

As you and other have mentioned.... it was an eventful time in the woods.... just another good memory to add with the many.

I know some don't get to share the excitement of hunting with their spouse, I also know others that do..... and to me, it's quality time spent with the one you share your life with and love.
