Video of Buck - 2.5 or 3.5?

By the way, this is over a mock scrape I started last year. Does, bucks, coyotes, and even hogs come to this thing for some reason. I pee in it every time I pull my card.

According to my lease rules - I can't shoot him but I'm thinking if he's 3.5 maybe he should be taken out?
Don't know what your lease rules say, but I would see no reason to "take him out" unless YOU consider him a "trophy" buck.
My best guess is he is 3 1/2, and will gain considerable antler mass in another year of living.

I wouldn't worry about any antler genes he might be passing along, since most antler traits seem to come from the momma deer rather than the papa deer.

I've read that too, but I also have countless examples of 'Management' pages that say otherwise.

But mainly from Texas, on deer that are behind a fence, and from ranches in the business of selling "breeder" bucks?

It seems logical that some antler characteristics come from Papa Buck; but more of the studies I've seen on free-range deer seem to indicate more of these traits come from Momma Doe. Just saying, regarding that particular buck you have videoed, I wouldn't worry much about his genetic "contributions" to the local herd. I'd be more concerned about club rules causing the better antlered younger bucks to be killed before they mature.

Some studies have indicated that a higher percentage of mature bucks in a local herd contribute to larger antler growth on younger bucks (even when those mature bucks have small antlers). This was thought to be primarily for two reasons: Different hormones released by mature bucks that appeared to stimulate antler growth on other bucks; and the presence of more older bucks suppressing the breeding of younger bucks (causing them to spend more time eating than chasing does, thus getting better nutrition leading to higher weights and larger antlers).
