Walmart and Academy were out of the Maverick and neither knew when they would be stocked again so I went for the New England Pardner they had at wally world. Very similar in specs to the maverick...3 inch chamber, modified choke....I will see how it patterns and decide if it needs a new choke or not for turkeys.

Anyone used this gun before? pros/cons?

Lol I own 3 of them, 2 20 gauges and 1 12 gauge, all of mine are full choke though, they are extremely good guns for the money, I have killed several turkey with mine, and countless squirrels, and my dad even put a slug in one and shot a deer at 75 yds with the 20 gauge, so it will do the job, and when it comes to chokes, you might not find many that fit it, but once again you might shoot it and realize you don't need a choke on it, just have to work em closer into range

Thanks and glad to hear you've not just used them but also killed turkeys with them.

If I get the small game permit for WMAs sometime I might just go out and hammer squirrels, yotes, whatever else is in season.

got 25 rounds of the cheap winchester 2 3/4 (I cant remember what shot #) but they were cheap high velocity bird loads at walmart...will do some target practice soon as I find a place to shoot.

Yep, id recommend the 2 3/4 hevi shot loads for squirrels, around $10 a box, and the maybe step it up to the 3 in hevi shots for turkey, man those things won't die unless you put a few shots in the neck area and up, but id get a cheap site to go over the bead at the end, the bead seems to cover up to much of the turkey at anything past 20 yds, and yep, I think my first 5-6 turkey were killed by my new englander 12 gauge

I will pattern it before hunting and decide on the choke and shot to use and yes, there will be pics come april. actually I might even post pics after I do some patterning on turkey targets

I would look into the Federal turkey loads with the Flight Control wads in #6 shot. You say your hunting within 40 yards..... mostly around 30. Those shells might be your ticket with a full choke.

Haven't shot anything with it yet so I don't know about the recoil but will hopefully get out to the range over the weekend and shoot some of the cheap loads.

I have one with a 3" chamber. It kicks harder than any gun I ever shot.
Hmm I will see how mine does

Mine came with a built in recoil pad, and it doesn't kick much at all
I think mine has it too..a rubber-like pad about 1/2 inch thick or so at the butt of the stock.

It's a heavier gun (with the 28" barrel) so I figured it would kick less. but I will see once I actually shoot it. got a bunch of cheap 2 3/4 rounds to empty

30-40yds with a modified choke will be more like a PRAYER....you may kill some from time to time but that is WAY far for a modified choke. heck some people have issues at 40yds with a full or even an extra full.

I would not recommend anyone shooting 40yds with a modified choke in...even 30 may be pushing it.

I won't shoot one at 40 yards, if I cant get the bird to come closer than I am not doing well enough or I need to come back another day from another angle. I'm hoping to get all my shots within 30 at the most and I will pattern the gun first and see if I need a new choke or not.

First off, I admire your enthusiasm getting into this type hunting.

Second, it can be tough, but hang in there and you will make it happen.

Now, I am NOT telling you how to hunt, nor am I an expert, but I do have several birds under my belt. This is just something for you to think about.

You say you want to shoot closer than or max of 30 yards. If you can't get them that close you would just come back later.

I know you would like to have your birds at 30 yards or closer every time, the rest of us would too. But the fact is, even the best callers in the world can't force a tom to come to their calls if he isn't willing.

You never know what will happen, it's great to want to have them at 30, but why not be prepared for 40 just in case? Would be better to be prepared and not have to shoot that far, than need to and can't..... especially if you have spent an hour or two walking and/or working a bird just to have him hang up at 40 and you not be able to take the shot because of distance..... then leave empty handed.

My thoughts, and my thought only: If I'm putting in the effort to make it happen, I will do everything/anything, I can to take that bird for a ride in my truck. Being prepared is a comfort to myself.

I wish you the best and good luck this coming spring my friend!! It truly is a test of patience.

Thanks for the advice. Like I said I will shoot a few times and see how it patterns at 30 and maybe even 40 yards and if I'm not comfortable with the # of pellets in the turkey target then I will look for a better choke.

i had one of those in 10gauge when i was younger, it was a turkey stomper but after hurting my shoulder blade because i forgot to lean up away from the tree i got rid of it
