Been bow hunting the last 3 wks with 1 tag left and just have not been able to seal the deal.
Close as I came was last week on public ground when I called in 2 longbeards to 18 yrds. I wanted the strutter as he had the best beard and spurs but he would not give me any other shot than through the fan and into the spine. Out of the 14 bow birds I have I had not ever taken this shot but had heard that it was a good lethal shot. I drew my bow as they went behind a big tree on their way in. By this time I had been at full draw for about a minute. I put my 20 yrd pin on the butt hole and let it rip. My 2 bladed Rage didn't open both side when it hit the thick quills of the fan. It made the arrow do a 90 degree straight out the left side. Cut the 2 center feathers out of his fan. No blood on the arrow.
Fast forward 7 days later to this morning and I am on the next ridge over from where I made that shot. I get set up on 2 longbeards about 730 that are gobbling probably 300 yrds away. I was afraid to move any closer cause I was seeing Deer every where and was afraid of spooking them. Took 1 1/2 hrs for them to show up but when 1 of them goes into strut he is missing his 2 center feathers. I knew right then which bird I was shooting if given the chance. Took him at 40 yrds.
Could not believe I was able to get a 2nd chance on this bird.
10 7/8" beard
