In the core areas where I hunt, I'm seeing/hearing/calling in a handful of single hens each day I've been out. Saturday I never heard a gobble, Sunday I heard 1 bird burn it up on the roost but immediately shut up and never gobble again once I called to it, and Wednesday I never heard a gobble.
IMO, and it's hard to make any educated assumption, but they are way way way behind where I hunt. I think they are in huge groups, and have barely begun to breed. The single hens are probably either jennies that have left or been booted, or their very old hens ready to breed with no one to court them.
As of today this is the most bizarre start to the season where I hunt. It's hard to say how many of any are out there, as it feels like there are virtually none.
