Well I went back to my grandparents farm and as soon as I got out of the truck probably 45 minutes before day light before I could shut my door there was turkeys gobbling in a holler close by. Went and setup on a ridge about 150 yards from the gobblers made a few soft calls they gobbled there head off fly down comes and I hear one down below me on a old road next to a field so I call to him he gobbles immediately so does the other ones back in the holler 150 yards or so with 2-4 minutes the turkey comes in to my right about 20 yards I could not get the gun swung around enough to get a shot still he is gobbling his head off he must not have seen the decoy from where he was cause he got spooked I wanted to swing and shoot him but was afraid of spooking him or missing he ended looking and went over to the next ridge in front of me. I could not get him to come back to me I called soft aggressive scratched leaves he wouldn't move he gobbled at everything. What could I have done to coax him to come back? He ended up spooling and went on down in the holler I'm sure I could go back in a few days and kill him or one of his buddies but what could I have done?

same thing happened to me exactly earlier this year, and we have the same name! lol. in my position i couldnt have swumg and shot or i wouldve pulled my torso off my legs, but with the way the season is going now i probably would risk it if i had it to do over again lol

Well I have killed one turkey this year I wasn't going to be greedy and wound it or miss thought if I didn't spooked it could prolly kill it in a week or so I couldn't swing around much farther than what I was he almost come behind me but it wasn't directly behind me

Turn slowly and shoot. If you swing quickly he will sometime just bolt off flying. If you turn slowly, he will start putting and walking quickly away. This will give you one shot at him as he is about 30 or 35 yards. I guess every guy has a different approach, but this is what I do.

yeah i dont really have the confidence in swinging and shooting, rather wait him out and see what happens. probably the best choice what you did, you'll see him again

IMO there is nothing more you could have really done and seems you did the right thing but not popping off a few HIGH risk shots.

just remember on the next set up to get where you can try and move to either side if need be.

Ya lesson learned what is crazy is he went the long way around he flew prolly 150 yard off the roost down the holler then came back up to me but they always have a trick up there sleeve he will live to walk another day I'm not really upset or anything I had a great morning all together thankful the good Lord allowed me to get out

You did nothing wrong. It happens. It's turkey hunting. One thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned is, it was early & he is still gobbling, ya got time to set up on him again. When you're turkey huntin, you're on turkey time, meaning that turkey has all day long to do whatever he pleases. Okay, he got away from ya on the first set. No big deal, just be a little stealthy & move around & set up on him again, just don't rush it. Assume that you already spooked him, so give him a little while (1-2 hrs). Soft calling & scratchin leaves has been the death of many a turkey.

This is my 29th season of turkey hunting. I have learned far more from the birds that I didn't kill than the ones I have killed. When it comes to turkey hunting, I don't call them "mistakes". I call them "learning experiences". They can be the most frustrating thing in the world to hunt & they can be the absolute most fun too. Good Luck with the rest of your turkey hunting career.
