What do you think of this spot? (on a WMA)

This is on Yanahli WMA in Maury co. I'm looking at this one spot (inside of the sharpest, hairpin-like river bend) to start opening day of turkey season for a few reasons -

1. It is made of fields and woods, and is adjacent to the river.
2. It's not a huge, popular area like Cheeks Bend.
3. According to the map, you have to hike - I don't see any roads going straight into it, unlike so many other spots on the WMA. Nearest road I can see is Sharp Lane which leads into another small portion of the WMA. So anyone going down that road would likely hunt in that portion of the WMA, and not hike east to the river bend. Am I right?

Do you think this is a less likely spot for hunters, especially novices, to show up on opening day? I know I'm a novice myself but I want some distance from the rest of the crowd...don't we all...

I will definitely scout this place out before season. And I will have a plan B and maybe plan C spot picked out just in case it's more popular than expected on opening day.

Thanks for any input...

I would say scout it out, but it looks like it might have potential because of the access.

I hunt there quite a bit. I have never been there, but I can show you a pretty good place if you would like. PM me if your interested.

Looks good I'll meet you there ! Lol.. on a serious note its hard to tell unless you do some ground truthing. I'm going to try and hunt yanahli a little myself this spring. If anyone wants to get together and scout some places and or do some hunting come season let me know!

catman,

This is going to sound really greedy and selfish, but here goes.

I would never post good spots that I have found on the internet for all to see. That is a really quick way for that spot to be covered up and overhunted in the blink of an eye. Now dont get me wrong, I will take my buddies, or a kid to the spots I have been successful at, but I sure wouldn't be posting it on the internet for EVERYONE to see. JMO

My advice on any public land is this: scout, scout, scout, and keep it to yourself.

I know its the norm for hunting public hunting land , but its really frustrating when you get to a spot you want to hunt and there are four trucks parked there.

Best piece of advice you could have been given.

Good luck with that catman, I would start in that spot and make wide circles around in it looking for feathers, droppings, or leaves scratched around, the freshest sign you find closer to turkey season would be your best bet, if they are using that area, then gobblers should be nearby come turkey season, but once you find "your" spot, keep it to yourself and get ready for turkey season

bvoss I was just starting to think that after I posted it, now it's too late to take down the link but oh well...I will hope for the best.
