And I'm not just talking about the UT game. There were several instances (in what little games I watched) that I saw of balls that were ruled catches on the field, but were overturned because there was a bobble, hit the field, etc.

It is getting ridiculous.

Buy, let's take UT's for instance. How can a runner just have to break the plane, then no matter what else happens (ball knocked from his hands, etc.) before he "finishes" the run be counted a TD, but yet a receiver has clear control AND feet down, but he loses the ball as he hits the ground not count?

1.Be sure Player has FIRM Control of Ball for ENTIRE PLAY for it to be a CATCH, (Control Established after player makes a Move or is Tackled Immediately in Possession). WHEN IN DOUBT, WIPE IT OUT.
2. If Player clearly Controls Ball in the air and is Firmly in possession, then Player touches the ground and continues to secure possession of the Ball or Nose of Ball touches ground, yet Player retains his firm control of Ball and it does not Move during this action, the Process of the CATCH is not interrupted, so it is a CATCH.
3. On a Simultaneous CATCH, RULE Survival of the Fittest, whoever has Ball at End of Process will Have Possession.
4. If a Player has a "Tippy-toe" stance on the Sideline or End line either from returning to the ground or on the ground after establishing Firm Control, the Player must maintain that stance for the duration for it to be a CATCH. If the Toe touches inbounds, but the Heel touches out of bounds, RULE INCOMPLETE.
5. If Player turns after a Catch? And Ball is not secure or SEEMS secure and/or player is moving ball for possession, and CONTACT is made and Ball becomes loose- RULE INCOMPLETE.
6. If Player, whether airborne or not, makes a Catch in Field of Play or the End Zone, is immediately hit or immediately goes to ground (In or Out of Bounds) and looses possession – RULE INCOMPLETE.
7. If Airborne Player makes a Catch and contacts ground in the Field of Play or the End Zone and Ball becomes loose – RULE INCOMPLETE.
8. No Cheap Fumbles. The ground cannot cause a fumble, BUT the ground can cause an incompletion as illustrated in #6 and #7. A Player must maintain possession during the entire process for it to be a CATCH.
A CATCH IS WHEN A PLAYER ESTABLISHES FIRM CONTROL OR THE BALL AND MAINTAINS POSSESSION FOR THE ENTIRE PLAY.

FOR A COMPLETION TO EXIST, THE CATCH PROCESS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ITS ENTIRETY WITHOUT INTERRUPTION.

BE PATIENT ON CATCH/NO CATCH, SLOW DOWN, PROCESS PLAY.

YOU MAKE THE CALL:

A receiver runs a crossing route in the end zone. The ball is thrown slightly in front of him, and he makes a fingertip catch while losing his balance and stumbling. He takes 6 steps before finally going to the ground but loses the ball when he contacts the ground. Catch or not :pop: :D ?

Catch, Interception, Recovery Article 3.
a. To catch a ball means that a player:
1. secures control of a live ball in flight with his hands or arms before the ball touches the ground, and
2. touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then
3. maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball, advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc., and
4. satisfies paragraphs b, c, and d below.
b. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent) he must maintain complete and continuous control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone. This is also required for a player attempting to make a catch at the sideline and going to the ground out of bounds. If he loses control of the ball which then touches the ground before he regains control, it is not a catch. If he regains control inbounds prior to the ball touching the ground it is a catch.
c. If the player loses control of the ball while simultaneously touching the ground with any part of his body, or if there is doubt that the acts were

simultaneous, it is not a catch. If a player has control of the ball, a slight movement of the ball will not be considered loss of possession; he must lose control of the ball in order for there to be a loss of possession.
d. If the ball touches the ground after the player secures control and continues to maintain control, and the elements above are satisfied, it is a catch.
b. e. An interception is a catch of an opponent's pass or fumble.
c. f. A catch by any kneeling or prone inbounds player is a completion or
interception (Rules 7‐3‐6 and 7).
d. g. A player recovers a ball if he fulfills any of the three the criteria in paragraphs
a, b, c, and d for catching a ball that is still alive after hitting the ground.
e. Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch, interception or
recovery.
f h. When in question the catch, recovery or interception is not completed.

^^^^^That a long list of rules to tell you what's a catch & what's not lol.. for something that should be so simple.

NFL just went through this "What is a catch" cause so may players, coaches and fans could not tell you or agree with the rules on what was a catch or not a catch

Like how u can drag a single big toe across the ground in college then the land outta the field of play and it's a catch. Or sticking the ball an inch over the goal line in mid air with out any body part in the end zone or feet even on ground is a TD. Even if it gets slapped outta your hands.

But jumping in the air wrapping two arms around the ball falling Down with it, knees hit the ground then ball jiggles lose is not a catch/TD.

Don't really agree, but don't really care.

yep the ncaa football rulebook is thick
Yeah, you would think something so simple as a catch or not a catch would be pretty easy to explain.

The NFL went crazy with it after Dez bryant's catch/not a catch in the playoffs Vs. green bay.

I just seen a show on a while back that had Michael Irvin, Jerry rice, and marvin harrison on it with a few other ESPN guys on there.

they would show clips of plays thorough out last season, and they would even fight and disagree with each other on what was a catch or not a catch.

The ground can't cause a fumble, but it can cause an incompletion. [emoji35]

You are correct by this list, and thank you. That is my point exactly. How can a player take six steps with sure control of the ball the entire time and it not be a catch? The rules are crazy.

I hate instant replay. I say just let the Refs do their jobs. Questionable calls are just part of the game.

I used to be for it, because back when I ref'd, my only goal was to get the call right, whatever it took.

My opinion has changed because the definition of "right" has changed.
