what the heck!

I'm no guide but last couple years I have experienced what you are describing. You have everything lining up "perfect" and then it doesn't happen. The difference for me is this year I didn't buy in to it and have sit back and observed. So far, from what I've observed it's been a let down.

Again, I'm not a guide, so I have no skin in it. Id hate to have paid for a hunt only to be let down. It's become a total crap shoot anymore. I'm still good at patterning deer, but when it comes to waterfowl I am at a loss.

We've been fortunate to hunt the same farm the last 15 years. 3 years ago was one of the best seasons we've ever had. This year is by far the worst. We have not seen near the number of ducks we usually do.

The farm right across the road from us has close to 300 acres of rest area which is a mixture of crp, small willows, standing corn, and unharvested rice. I probably saw 300 ducks in it on Monday and prior to that there hasn't been more than a handful.

One member said that if something doesn't change by Sunday he is completely done duck hunting. I get frustrated with the ducks sometimes but I will continue to hunt as long as there are ducks and am healthy enough to do so. I can't imagine my life without duck hunting. I love getting muddy, wet, cold, taking the dog and maybe shooting a duck or two. Especially love how overjoyed the wife is when we come tracking in mud, leaves and feathers everywhere.

I'll keep at it as long as I can just for the camaraderie in the blind, the sunrises, and the breakfasts. We might kill a duck, we might not, but we're gonna have some tales to tell and we are gonna eat good.

Yall sound like some middle Tennessee hunters😂

I was 10-20 years late at getting started

I'm in the same boat. Been at it about 8 years now. The first 3 years had me hooked but the last 5 have been brutal around here! I won't be stopping any time soon, in fact probably be in deeper by this time next year but it would be nice to squeeze in a few good hunts to offset the bad sometimes.

It could be worse:
The one-mallard limit was in place during the fall of 1962 in the Mississippi Flyway. This was part of a set of restrictive regulations for waterfowl management that included a 23-day season and a two-bird limit. Hunters who only shot mallards were required to retrieve their decoys after shooting one bird.

I was 17 that season and had been hunting ducks since I was thirteen.

Would love to hear more of those stories again Hawk. You need to post more!
