I will hopefully take over a local archery shop by the end of the month. For curiousity what type of game cams would yall stock. The higher end cams or the cheapest cams on the market? The store currently doesn't carry any cameras at all.

I would go with about 40% cheap cams, 40% midrange and 20% high end cams.

Cheap<$110
Midrange~$110-$200
Expensive>$200

The reason I say fewer expensive is most people I know buy cheap cams. There are some that will buy a Reconyx or other top end cam but the average person will buy a midrange or cheap cam.

The only thing that would worry me about cheap cams is competition with walmart.

Also most people who are new to cams will buy a cheap cam like a WGI or Tasco.

Not to discourage you, but I have 16 trail cams and I bought them all online when they were on sale at a big discount. I think it would be very hard for a small local business to compete in the electronics market, and trail cams are basically small electronics. You will be selling trail cameras against WalMart, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabela's, Amazon.com and every major bow shop that sells online. That's going to be a challenge. Maybe there's a reason the shop doesn't currently sell trail cameras.

Vermin93 nailed it. The way that vendors have to stock certain amounts of a product etc.. just to carry it and then, to have to compete with big box retailers? I doubt anyone would touch it.

But the key to the above road blocks...Get what they cannot get.
HOMEBREWS,find a good homebrew builder and work a deal.
I bet you could not keep them in stock.
If they want the cheap chinese junk let them have it,But most hunters want something they can get worked on localy and takes good pics.WITH A WARRANTY that the others cannot touch.

The way it works at my swimming pool store is you want to stock just the high end stuff. People tend look for it in a local store. Besides remember you will have to pay taxes on that inventory so work your deals with distrbution that you can return some of the unsold inventory at the end of the season. For the most part you will want that store empty off season too reduce your taxes.

Sounds like a pretty good idea too me. I think enough people are getting tired of the Chineese junk that a good line of homebrews with a long warranty would be a good market for both you and the maker.

I would agree with the homebrew idea. Also on upper end cameras like ReconyX maybe you could cut a deal with volume and price. If you could get them cheaper by doing so maybe you could get enough Tndeer members to pre-buy them.

I Would like to wish you luck with your store! i might add that what ever your choice is on cams to carry, i would personaly take it up a notch and take over and be the intermediary between your customers of your cams and the factory. Maybe handle the warranty work and shipping? thats something i havnt seen yet.
Number one, nearly all cams fail whether its right out of the package to 4 yrs down the road whether it be Moultrie or Reconyx.

GoodLuck

Reconyx my friend! Noboby around here sales them and some hunters would love buying them locally and not online!

TN sales tax on a $450 Reconyx is about $40. Or you could buy it online and get free shipping and pay no sales tax. I think most people would buy online to save the $40 in sales tax. I know I would.

There's nothing better than helping out the small business owners. If I could find a local store that had what I need I won't mind paying a little extra. I hate going to Bass pro and the other big box stores.

Thats why you need to get a hold of Fireman Jim and a few more
I have never sold any of mine ,maybe I need to but I like it the way it is no pressure and do what you want to ,I guess thats why I have 18 cams now.I know what Jim charges ,I could sell a plain Nikon L11 or s40 with no slave ...for 150.00
