Slow day so far, starting to get to me a little...spot #1 was quiet, and I found two wallowed out spots where hunters had sat down. Spot #2 they were bulldozing for whatever reason. Spot #3 I took a nap in the truck first, and am now out here listening to the breeze. Oh yeah the wind doesn't help here of course. Just had a deer come by downwind and run off.
At least I've seen a critter...

I'm almost done venting for now, I've got 5 1/2 hours left to get something figured out. About ready to stalk and shoot one if I have to, but I really want one to fire up and come to a call like they did so many times last year. Been a tough year for me as well. Is anyone out today and are you seeing or hearing any?

DANG IT DANG freakin bird

Got one to gobble close by twice. Sounded kind of jakey but I was ready. Not ready enough. 20 yards I saw the long beard. He turned to walk away and I got the gun all the way up and he ran.

Freakin kills me...guess it's better than missing lol. I'm shaking now and I got to leave and find another spot. He came across fence from private land.

Re: Where are the birds

I was out this morning, birds blew it up on the limb, but went pretty quiet once on the ground. Never really got in the game, but after the first two weeks I'm just happy to be hearing them.

Re: Where are the birds

Glad I made it back inside my truck. Knew I shouldn't have set the keys down on the seat...one stick is good enough to push the crank and roll the window just a hair farther down so I could stick my skinny arm in and unlock the door. :D

Maybe I'll make good and call in another one now that the wind has slightly lessened, and I called one in.

Nice pic fourwheeler. Setterman I wish I could hunt more early mornings and hear em on the limb.

Time to quit wasting battery and go find another one...

exactly the same for me this morning. Granted only could hunt till 7:30 but they went quiet once they flew down.

Re: Where are the birds

Dead quiet this morning here in Henry Co. too. And got soaking wet to boot! LOL :super:

Re: Where are the birds

I'm back from two days in Stewart Co., and they were really quiet there as well.

I did kill a little 2yr old this morning thanks to some Setterman advise (thanks, Jim!), but really only because I was right there when they flew down. My "bad" bird was not roosted in his usual spot this morning, or if he was, he was entirely shut mouth. I think I'll rest up through this next series of rain and then try it again.

Re: Where are the birds

Yesterday I cleaned a couple gobblers, and was surprised both had craws full of acorns, good looking acorns. Can't ever remember finding craws full of acorns this late into April. But if they're still feeding much on acorns, that explains why they've been pretty much ignoring those lush clover plots, and been spending less time in fields.

At least you got out. I got to work today at 7:45. I left at 6:45 with no break and made it home by 7:15. I get to look at turkeys in fields going down 96 every morning.....

I drove back home through some back roads in Houston and Dickson Co. this morning, and it seemed like almost every big field had at least one "blowed up" gobbler strutting.

But, where I am hunting, like Wes said, they seem to be concentrated in the hard woods rather than fields or clear cuts.

Work gets in the way when you become a high flying executive.

I'll be in your building tomorrow and I see them on 96. Wonder if anybody hunts those birds or has ever asked permission to?

Re: Where are the birds

They are all jammed up at my neighbors silos. Almost all of them. Insane amount of birds fly off roost and head straight to them.

Re: Where are the birds

Dead quiet in West Tenn around Bolivar. Friend of mine has taken 2 birds around Jackson, TN this week. He put the hen calls down. The Tom's will not reply to a Hen Call this year...... He got both of these birds on two different days by stalking the woods, listening, and then cutting them off. I have bagged birds that way before but it is not near as fun as having a Gobbler come to a call over a 30-45 minute time frame. Nothing like it in the world of hunting. Too bad it's been 2 years since I or my partner have experienced such a hunt. Oh Well, that is Turkey Hunting.

This is what I've been saying. Heard an unreal amount of gobbling this morning after fly down but I'm hunting the hardwoods still.

Oh yeah I am high flying for sure...

I see the biggest flock just down the hill from the Triune stop sign. I think most of the land once you cross the creek is hunted for deer lightly, but not much turkey hunting going on. I doubt any of them would let you at least not without a hefty price tag.

I asked Mr. Adams (he used to live in a Winnebago on the right side) back in 07' if i could hunt. He said, yes, but then 2 weeks later, started going on about how he hadn't retired (he was 92) and then started telling me about the battle of Okinawa and shooting a man in his driveway in the late 40's after the war. I determined his family didn't want any one hunting there and he wasn't the best person to make the decision, so I just let it go. The land were the Gas Main station (i think that's what it is) on the left side belongs to Mrs. Chrisman and she told me she would, but had the farming rights leased and the farmer told her he would not lease if she let people out there to hunt. coincidentally, she mentioned they killed 30+ deer in 2006 and I have not seen many deer on those fields since 2008.
