will be the easiest to make for a first timer? I am not electronically challenged. I just don't want to build a spaceship before I build a bottle rocket. I think my IR4 is screwed up on me. The last two weeks I have only gotten 4 pics a week and this week had 6. It hasn't been catching me coming up to it like it used to either. Today I stood in front of it and waved and the light flashed several times but it didn't take a pic. I am thinking of trying a homebrew. I just wish I could find a site that explained better what all you had to have.

A Sony P32 or a Sony P52 are the easiest hacks for me.

Basically you need a good water tight box, replace the seal with a quality rope seal.
You will need a control board, hacked digital camera, flash gasket, two pieces of quality glass for the lens and flash holes. You will need a fresnal lens (HPWA preferably)
If you decide to run external power, then you will need to hack the camera for the external power and you will need whichever size battery housings. You will need a tube of GOOP glue to seal all you cuts.

How long a battery life can you get internally? I wired my IR4 to run off of a 6 volt instead of the 4 C batteries it takes and I didn't have to change the battery once what time I had it out last summer before season and it still showed half or 3/4 full when I pulled the camera from the woods.

Do not overlook the L11 Nikon 6mp. ,easy as all get out.
If you can solder a wire to a solder point you can hack this cam.

I use to think the P32 P52 was easy also ...and it is but you must get your SA lined up or it will not work,
The L11 as long as you do not bridge any solder points you are good....You have to bridge points 1&2 and solder to 3 Then 5 then 11 .
12 in all,if you want ext. the easiest in the world ,solder a wire to a mound of solder, bring all 6 wires out the bottom .
It is quite easy believe me.
But I will always have a place in my heart for the big P52 that takes amazing pics.
Nobody wants the big ugly duckling,But I will take every one anybody does not want.I think it is easier then the P32 or P41

The two AA bateries if you run them alone, I run Energizer Lithium's. Depending on how I have my settings, and if the pics are not all at night, probably around 600-800 pics from most of my Sonys.

The Nikon L11 that Darton man was referring too, is also a really nice little cam. Not as good as a flash as the P32, but still gets the job done.

There are many different types of control boards. They are basically what you prefer. The SSSII is the smallest and easiest I have used... but I really like the Bigfoot Trailmaster board too.

I seen on a video on youtube a guy was putting one together and he put stuff in it for like AA batteries and maybe some C or D's also. What is the purpose of that.

That is Probably EXT. power,As long as you re wire your Battery Boxes and keep the voltage below 4 volts ...you are good.
Your camera will pull off these EXT. Bat. for some time
You have to wire in Parallel, you can put 4 0r even 8 D Battery;s together as long as the you have POS. to Pos and Neg. to Neg.

If you wire them in series like they come ...6 volts you will fry your camera.
One more thing..a AA has 1.5 volts and a D has 1.5 volts,
But 4 D;s will last twice as long as 4 AA;s
It has to do with stored energy,I think the word I am hunting is amps.
I wired ....just for the heck of it 4 D;s to put out 1.5 volts...My cam would not even power up...I had it so low it began pulling from my cam, electricity will take the easiest route ...much like light.

But If he was putting in a Slave Flash... that may be the reason for the EXT.....FIREMAN JIM can tell you about them.
I myself think they are a waste ,you can Download software to brighten a Photo to make it look like it is daylight.
If you do not believe me go to Outdoor Talk and look at Bob R
post about the Sony program ...I think it is PMB.
It is incredible at what it will do ...in one photo you cannot see the bear ...when he apply;s his software it looks like daytime, and not all washed out.

Lots of guys will buy a homebrew for their first one so they can see how it all is put together. I can hack a camera for you and you can do the rest. I will help you anyway I can....

I found a Sony P52 pretty cheap so I bought it. Now I just got to get everything else. I know I want a pipe through the box if possible. Do you have room to do that in a Pelican 1040? I don't think I will have much trouble doing the hack if I can find some instructions or a video of what to do. I just think I am going to wind up getting everything and find out I have missed some little part. I am thinking of going with a bigfoot board. Is the standard or trail master better? Also, do you need stand offs to mount the thing in the box?

You will NEVER fit a P52 and a BigFoot board and 2 d's in a 1040. Better step up to a 1060. Go to my website and look at how the STU CAM is laid out. It is a 1060 case with a Big foot but I can only fit 2 C cells in there. And I have built ALOT of cameras....

Get a Seahorse 120 ,it will fit like a glove ,plenty of room for EXT.
Steven stone uses them He got me hooked on them ,You cannot destroy them they will never leak ,they have a little carry handle,I will see if I can find a pic.
here is the inside of one with a Bigfoot board and 4AA;s

This is a very good way to do it. You can have something to go by when you build your own!

The L -11 would be about the only thing I would reccomend for a new guy,I may be forgetting one but that is all that comes to mind right now.
I think your first choice was the best however,
