How many hunters here hold a big gobbler in the same esteem as a trophy buck? I personally think a lot more of taking a trophy buck than a gobbler. As far as turkeys go, I don't care what size they are as long as they are legal but I enjoy hunting them just as much.

To me, no comparison. A mature whitetail buck in Tennessee, 4 1/2 years or older is almost impossible to harvest. I've taken lots of gobblers, in several states, but to me a mature deer is the hardest animal I've ever hunted.

I agree 100%.

Well a deer is pretty tough when they get old but I like turkey hunting pretty good either way buck or gobbler both are always fun to hunt and challenging

An old hermit gobbler with 1.5 spurs that's passed the mating ritual and doesn't gobble in the spring time is as challenging as any game gets.

IMO a mature buck is at the top of the heap as far as vulnerability is concerned. I have killed one four year old bird and several three year old, and as far as I'm concerned they act no different that a jake as far as wariness is concerned. Some have been downright dumb! lol Granted, they are much harder to kill than a jake, but I believe that the primary reason for that is that there are fewer birds in each age class as they progress. So, I believe that the deer is a far, far bigger challenge than the turkey. That said, I'd rather hunt turkeys! lol

I think the older gobblers are just down right stubborn rather than smart. I have always believed that the older gobblers expect the hens to come to them rather than go running to every call he hears.

Well, IMO no turkey in the world is smart! lol Anything with a walnut sized brain can't be too smart. But, senses, eyesight, hearing, and scared of anything that moves, that's another matter. But, I suppose that the longer anything is alive, the more experiences they have, then then the more that they learn, regardless of intelligence. Be that as it may, I think that I have a chance of killing the "smartest" turkey in the woods, every time that I go afield. And certainly isn't so with any buck beyond its second year.

I've only killed 6 bukcs in my nearly 18 years of deer hunting and not a whole lot more opportunities at bucks. However, I've turkey hunted for 5 seasons now and already killed 5. To me killing a nice buck (anything close to 100") makes me more proud than a turkey, but the turkeys are a lot more fun to hunt down.

Deer.
I haven't really ever seen 2 big deer with matching/identical headgear. ALWAYS different/unique to his own... Now....
How many 2.5 year old, 9 1/2 or 10 inch beard, 18 to 20 pounds turkeys have you seen or killed? A TON!
