I have heard a mixture on approaches and methods and am fairly new.
As for decoys I have heard to set them down around 80 to 90 yards past your setup bc it may be hard to bring the gobbler all the way too the decoys.
With blinds I have heard that some people prefer not to use them bc it limits there mobility.
More than anything I just wanted some input and also.
Who is using decoys opening day? How do you plan on setting them up?
And
Who will be using a blind?

It all depends on where i am hunting. If I am hunting a field then yes I will have my decoys out and the blind set up. But if I am in the timber then I will be using neither.

If my birds continue to do what they've been doing, I'll be in a blind and using decoys. The birds where I hunt usually pitch down in an open field and unless disturbed, usually stay there all day. I have found the best way to kill these type birds is hunting out of a blind. It can sometimes be a waiting game, but eventually one bird will bring the entire flock to your decoys. I have also found calling can be a negative a lot of times with this scenario. It's pretty much a waiting game.

I wont be in a blind and not sure on decs yet. I only use them about 30% of the time. I will only put out decs if I am setting up in a place i know they are close or if it is very easy to slide them out.

You will get caught putting out decs more then you think especially if the birds are still on roost. IMO the set up is more key then putting out decoys. If you can get a good set up like a small knoll the bird has to peak over to see then you really dont need them.

just my opinion though. some use decoys alot and others very little. I am sure there are numbers out there but i wonder what the % are of people who use them all the time vs people who never use them and kill success.

Turkeys pay no attention to blinds! I love using mine in the right situations. Limits mobility. Dekes first few wks. of season then not so much. I use my blind/dekes more when the birds have been pressured for the long haul hunts. Sit and wait for them to get comfortable with the set up and come on in!!

for new hunters i would actually say NOT using decoys could benefit them. Without them that is one less thing to think about and 1 less thing you have to worry about doing and getting busted trying to put them out.

trying to sneak up and put out decoys causes a big delay in getting set and still and makes some try and get that much closer when they could have just sat down and got ready.

decoys can be a BIG handicap at times that i know for a fact especially if you like to run and gun type.

If you are old(I am), hunting on your own place(I do), have a long pasture bordered by wooded hillsides on each side(I do), know where the turkeys are likely to be(I do), then I would sooner leave my shotgun at home as leave my dekes. Different setups at different times. I set up several pop-ups at various locations and leave them out the entire season. Also, once I see the turkey and/or I know that he sees my deke, I shut up. Most of the time, one Delta feeding hen, faceing me at 20 yards will get it done.
