Look at the amount of melted plastic on there and this was the third time through. They first 2 were worse.

Also this was on a barrel with only 10-12 round down it since I did this last. I left the choke cleaner in there longer this time to help melt the plastic which obviously helped.

UGH...is that from shooting those Win Longbeards? I had heard they were a little dirty and left more of the resin from the shot in the barrel.
What did you use to clean your barrel?

I use shooters choice choke cleaner and hoppes #9. That's just from federal flight control rounds and some standard bird shot.

I could be wrong but doesn't the wad keep the shot from touching the bore?

Yes and no. In the flight control wads that's what it's suppose to do but it really is there to try and hold as much of the shot as possible. In standard shot the wad is there to try and control the shot string so it's not all over the place but all the shot will not stay in the wad. This issue with dirty barrels is all that extra dirt and plastic causes friction with the wad thus making it not operate as it should as well as causing inconsistency with each shot.

In bird shot or duck hunting it's not as big of a deal due to different pattern set ups. In turkey hunting where you are putting all your eggs in 1 shot you want it to be as perfect as possible.
