Will I have to re-sight each one of my pins if I move my draw length from 29 to 28? I know I will lose some speed but will it be enough to affect each pin setting?

Thanks!

Yes, you'll have to make some adjustments. 1" of DL equals 8 to 10 fps for most bows. That will lower your POI about 4-5" at 20yds if you decrease your DL by an inch. Use your gang adjustment to move the whole sight to correct your top pin then you can make minor adjustments to your other pins to finalize the sighting in process.

I wouldn't let the loss of speed deter you from making the change. You'll be more accurate at the proper DL.

Ok the thing is I had my bow set up at bass pro 2 years ago and it was my first bow. So I had no clue what my draw length needed to be. So it was set on 29 when I shot it and the guy said that the draw length looked good for me. So I have shot it for 2 years at 29 and have no problem grouping arrows but at times it feels like I have overdrawn or feel like I am stretched way out and I can't find my anchor point real good. So I was tinkering with my bow yesterday and changed the draw length to 28 and drawed it back and it felt awesome! It felt like I could hold on the target alot better without as much movement!

As for the speed issue I could care less about losing some speed. My bow is super quiet so what does it matter how fast it gets there if they can't hear it coming???

Another ?

Will the same draw length on different bows feel the same?

The only thing that has kept me from trying a 28 on my bow is my brother had his hoyt set on 28 and I shot it a couple times but it felt like I couldn't come back far enough. It felt like I was crunched up. So I figured it would feel the same way with my bow but it doesn't! With my bow it feels just right with a 28!

Short answer is no. Long answer is...

All manufacturers are "supposed" to list their DLs according to AMO standards. Most cheat so that they can claim a higher IBO speed. I have had several Mathews bows (still have two) and ALL of them draw 3/8" long when set to specs. I have three Hoyt target bows and they all draw 3/16 - 1/4" long when set to specs. Most of them you can do some twisting on the string and cables to take up or let out about 1/4" from what the cam is supposed to shoot.

Measure the distance from the deepest part of the grip to the apex of the string at full draw. That's the true draw of the bow. Then you follow the manufacturer's formula to get the AMO DL. Hoyt says their AMO is true draw plus 1.75". Mathews defines their AMO as the center of the berger hole to the apex of the string at full draw plus 1.5".

I just worry about true draw and throw AMO out the window. :D

Here's how I measure true draw. I built a modified draw board (most of them are horizontal) that uses a geared worm winch instead of a ratchet winch. I can draw the bow with the winch and hold it at full draw. Then I can take all the measurements I need when tuning or making sight tapes.

Sorry for the fuzzy phone pic. All I have at work.

Thanks for the info! I shot a little bit this evening with it set at 28 and it was a little low at 20 yards but I think I will keep it at 28! Felt really good with it set there!

Could that be string stretch?
