Anyone in Wilson County (Lebanon Area) reload? If so, I was wondering if you might be interested in helping out a newbie?

I have taking the Intro to Reloading class at the Lebanon Gun Shop and found it very informative.

I have since purchased my equipment and finally have my bench set up.

I guess I am looking for someone to double check my equipment / work once I get started.

Thanks.

JP

it isnt as complicated as most people think,,just use plenty of lube and start low and go slow,,

if you can load a muzzle loader you should be able to reload ammo.

Agree it isn't that complicated. One thing I always try to do is make sure there is no one else around when I reload. It is real easy to get distracted when you are talking to some one. I really try to stay focused on what I am doing.

I found that it is very easy but also very easy to forget steps. I once loaded up 20 rds of 300 win mag and realized I forgot to prime them.

Thanks to all.

I figured I would start with some 38 spl. I had about 150 pieces of once fired brass so I went ahead and followed the steps that came with my Lee reloading die set.

1. I prepared my cases by tumbling and then inspecting them.
2. Full length sized and de-primed (if that is a word).
3. Flared the case just enough to allow the bulled to sit in it.
4. I then hand primed all the cases.

Now I am at the charge the case step...

I am using Power Pistol and am planning on dropping 6.1gr which is the middle of the road for a 125gr bullet according to the Hornady handbook.

This is the step that I was looking for someone to watch over my shoulder and make sure I am doing it correctly.

I plan on using the Lee perfect powder measure to dispense the powder and the Frankford Arsenal DS-750 digital reloading scale to verify my charge amount.

After that it is just a matter of seating the bullet to the correct depth, checking to make sure I am under the maximum OAL and putting the crimp on the case.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks again.

Jay

Sounds like you've studied well. When loading pistol rounds be VERY careful to not double charge a round. Pistol cases will hold at least twice the max powder charge and if you get distracted it can be done very easily and then you have a very dangerous round in the mix.

when loading pistol ammo on a single stage press when I charge the case with powder it goes straight to the press and gets a bullet seated ,,I do not charge over ONE case at a time without seating a bullet,

I just recently started reloading again after taking a break from it for many years. As everyone else has said, it seems like you are following the correct steps. I do remember back when I reloaded quite a bit I would have all of the handgun rounds in the block charged, I would look at all of them at the same time under a good light. If you had a double charge you could see it pretty easy. Then I would seat the bullets.

Thanks. I took that class about a year back. It was a great class and very informative. Actually I am one of the three guys in the top right photo. Since it took me about a year to gather up all the equipment I needed, I think I might just look into taking it again since I have probably forgot about everything I had learned.

Brad -

Thanks for coming by my house last night and helping out with the whole reloading process. 10 rounds in 4.5 hours has to be a new record... Thanks for going through all the details.

I found it odd that two different reloading manuals would have such great differences between max loads.

For those of you who already know him, you know he is a great guy, I could tell this in just one time meeting him.

It was great getting to know you and hope to hang out again in the future - your help was greatly appreciated.

I was telling Jay how me, you, Pat, sometimes DA(Lade) and Brent would catch a Fat Mo.

Jay, that's the Gravey I was telling you about. Met some good 'uns here. That 4.5 hours will get much quicker. Next time you want to do .380, you can come by my house and we'll crank some out. You can bring your dies and we'll set them up on my 4 hole turret or you can crank 38spl and .380 out on my progressive.

Yeah, I usually cross reference between two manuals and the Hogdon website when doing a new load. Always err on the side of caution. Those minimum charges are minimum for optimal performance and cycling. A few tenths grains low won't squib it. Just may not cycle your slide. In revo it's not a huge concern.

Maybe we can talk Gravey into coming over and slaughter a pizza too.

Great to meet you and I had a great time!
Brad
