winstons long jump.......well lets just say it wasn't that impressive either
"I think we kind of overemphasize the combine," Mayock said. "For me, it's a cross-check. The 50 hours of film work or whatever I did on Winston is not going to be overwhelmed by 20 throws out here today."
That being said, Winston didn't disappoint, and might have solidified himself as the primary target of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
"I thought Winston and Mariota were outstanding," Mayock said. "The thing I like about Jameis Winston is I think he throws an extremely catchable ball. He's got all the arm strength you want, but he makes it easy on the receiver based on the route.
"He understands that. He gets it. Just naturally and innately he gets it."
ESPN draft expert Todd McShay agreed.
"Jameis Winston's natural accuracy is rare," he wrote on his Twitter account. "Unique trait. Makes it look so easy!"
Added Matt Miller of NFLdraftscout.com: "If you're being objective, easy to see Jameis is the best passer .
Winston appeared fluid on his drops and throws as he went through the so-called "route tree" during drills Saturday. His accuracy was impeccable.
What most impressed Mayock - and undoubtedly many head coaches and GMs - was the decision by Winston and Mariota to throw at the combine rather than wait until their Pro Days.
Mayock shared a discussion he once had with former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy.
Dungy told Mayock the NFL wants "bright-light kids. Guys that aren't afraid to get out there with 32 NFL head coaches and general managers and just rip it. Who cares? Just get out there and rip it."
