He'll be much more impressive in rut shape and more memorable.
No doubt. I dont think he is a faniliar buck, but i have one that used that same spot the last 2 years that had some similarities to him (just bigger)(but has less points) that deer stayed religiously until late September then disappeared and showed up on the farm behind this ( which i can hunt , in mid december)

I will definitely leave him be and hope to find him feeding on acorns in October

I'm in the same boat. Velvet bucks do not intrest me at all. I don't like the looks of them. I'd never shoot a buck in velvet.

My nephews friend shot one at dark on a farm a few miles away. Text me and asked if i has any extra freezer space- i didnt. I told em that i keep my chest freezer full of bags of ice, that use in our fish coolers. They ask if they could buy a couple bags. Later on the came up and i gave them 2 bags. They thanked me and said its gonna be a long night. I hope it didnt spoil. In these temps, you dont have long. It was a nice buck, had 13 points

You definitely have to be prepared. I am accustomed to hunting some pretty hot temps in the Deep South and you just see people not worrying about the meat spoiling as much as you see here for whatever reason. It was a cool 55 here on the northern plateau Friday morning, I had a hoodie on. I shot the buck, waited about 30 minutes to track and got it out of the woods quick. I really didn't have to wait as it was 40 yards away but I couldn't see it so wanted to be sure it was dead. Anyway, I took it out of the woods and had it hung in my basement within another 15 minutes. It was starting to get hot outside then but the basement is a steady 66ish degrees. I cleaned it then and it went right into the freezer.
