New to Tennessee, and new to the Spring Hill area. I'm looking into spring turkey hunting, does anybody hunt any of the WMAs, specifically the Yanahli WMA? It looks like there is plenty of good turkey habitat, so I'm not overly concerned about seeing turkeys. Confirmation on turkeys being in the area would be great though. My bigger question is about the number of people hunting the area, does it tend to get over crowded?

Thanks!

My Two Cents

The vast majority of the WMA's in Middle Tennessee get murdered during the first week of turkey season.

Yanahli in general is a ZOO. Hunted opening day at Yanahli in 2016 and literally saw 7 different people in the woods by 9:00 A.M. If you want to see a Circus, you should go. Owl hooters on every ridge and full tilt box calling before fly down. Iv'e never been more uncomfortable while hunting anything, anywhere in my life. Everybody and their brother come from Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama, not to mention the people from Tennessee that hunt it and let there Private Ground Turkeys rest.

If I were you I would find a WMA that you actually stand a chance of getting away from the crowd. (i.e. big woods and few roads)

Only place I've ever hunted where I truly felt like I needed a kevlar vest!

Most WMAs are crowded for the first week or 10 days of the season. If you only have them to hunt, try going during the middle of the week -Tu-We-Th. Most of the wild crowd will be there on the weekends. Later in the season you will not have much of a problem of crowds. Also, if you want to hunt early in the season, just wait until about 10am to go. By that time you will almost have the place all to yourself.

Yanahli definitely has turkeys and definitely has hunters. I know a few people who won't even hunt there anymore. All depends on how bad you want to kill one. You can find and kill turkeys on the most pressured WMAs if you put in the effort. As said above, most middle Tennessee public lands get hammered by turkey hunters early in the season. This will usually push birds off onto surrounding private land and make them harder to hunt. Pressure dies off noticeable after the first week or two, but you'll still have to work to find your bird. Good luck!
