I am interested in making a wooden tube call on a lathe. I have no expire nice turning but through my job I am in contact with several wood turners and carvers. I have a volunteer to help me learn some and I want to try a tube call. My question to you folks is have any of you ever done this? If so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

when i did my last one (a few years ago) i took the original block down to the size and shape i wanted then did the final hole using a drill press. to bevel out the sound chamber i used a dremel to sand it down and just cut a half moon lip piece on a table saw.

thats prob the long way but it worked for me.

I am thinking about using Butternut. Do you glue the half moon mouth piece in or is it a solid part of the call? I have never used a tube call but have been watching demos of them and thought that is a must have tool for my vest.

i glued it in but the size of the hole as well as chamber make a big difference in sound as does wood density and overall length so you are gonna have to do some testing to see what you like. I will look around to see if is till have the specs on some of the ones i did or ask my buddy that still makes them for sale.

did one is Black Ivory wood one time and it looked awesome but sounded terrible due to how dense the wood was. You can go over to Oldgobbler.com they have a call making section and ask whatever you want and prob get a TON of replays.

Thank you I will check into that. Lucky for me I have access to all our local hardwoods. If I have the talent to make one I may find the right combination for the desired sound.

I just submitted my registration to the sight waiting for approval. I was browsing as a guest there is a lot of call builders for sure thanks again.

I wish I had a lathe, among many other tools lol

I make tube calls out of bamboo and cut right where the segments join so instead of gluing on a half moon, I cut one out of the existing layer of bamboo.
