Never ran one but a friend like his. Are the woodhaven calls worth the money? I would imagine a man could get more for the money. I still use an old roberts brothers glass and slate double side and also have a mike yingling copper pot. But looking to pick up something else. What would you guys recommend over the woodhaven. Thanks.

I wonder if they do best with a particular surface, sort of like Halloran does best with crystal calls.

I've heard plenty of praise for their box calls (and mouth calls obviously), but not so much about their pots.

I have a cherry classic crystal and I love it. And I like Pentecost and the woodhaven company in general. But if I had $100 to spend on a pot, there would be several others on the list. Lonzo would probably be near the top.

Pretty good calls, sound realistic. In my experience quality has gone down hill since they got real big 15 or so years ago. In the early 2000s woodhaven was about all I used.
I think for the money you can find one that will be more durable and sound just as good or better. But if you want one get it. They sound good.

I got a MAC call from a member on here and it sound great! It's aluminum with slate on the backside. Somebody had a glass one in the calssifieds this week. String music makes great pot calls on here. Blackstone custom calls is a good one. I have a glass call from them . I heard a young lady from Pennsylvania that could flat make that call sing! I ran into her and her dad in Alabama turkey hunting. As I spoke with them I realized she was a turkey calling phenom so I had her work the call for me. Unbelievable! I guess my point is I think there are numerous other pot calls out there to pay that much for a Woodhaven. You can probably just about get two of the others for one of theirs. Just my thought.

I have an original aluminum and slate that I bought from Mike in his little shop in the late 90's. Those are really solid calls. Somewhere in the early 2000's the quality went south and their calls became pretty awful in my opinion. The last call I bought was a cherry glass and it's one of the worst calls I've ever purchased. Same goes for his mouth calls, they suck. The latex is too thick, they're loud as hell and just not a great call any longer,

Woodhaven ship sailed a decade or more ago. The prices are ridiculous and the quality is sub par

if you want a great call from an even better person. Look up String Music here, his calls are really impressive both in sound and craftsmanship @String Music tagging him so he can chime in

Thanks, Setterman!

I can't personally vouch for the quality of Woodhaven calls as I haven't ever owned one. Mike seems like a smart businessman and is a hardcore hunter. Kudos to him for building his business and getting to the place where he can charge a high premium for his calls. His calls must be worth the price to a large following or he wouldn't still be in business.

However, I do know you can get at least as good of a call from custom callmakers for substantially less. What sets custom callmakers apart from calls you can buy in the store is their customer service. Most callmakers, including myself, will work with you on finding the right combo. If you don't like the call for whatever reason, you send it back for a full refund. Plus, the quality is generally better because these calls are not being mass produced. If I don't like how the call sounds or looks, I'm not going to send it to the customer.

All the makers mentioned above make quality calls. If you have a Roberts Brothers glass call that you like, then I'd recommend buying another one in a different wood. They make one of the best glass calls out there and a different wood will give you a little different sound.

To be honest, I haven't quite found a glass and crystal call combination that I'm satisfied with yet. If you don't want any of the guys mentioned above, I'd be happy to give you additional references.

I'm going to "specialize" in double-sided calls. To me, it's the most versatile type of call you can have. I currently offer double-siders in grey slate, green slate, anodized aluminum, blasted anodized aluminum and stoned aluminum. I'm not a fan of ceramic and the supply of red and purple slate has dried up and may not return. I'm still working on a glass call and crystal call combination and will offers those soon.

Also, as a side note, I'll be "launching" a new business name and logo in the very near future. I'm super pumped about the logo as it has a specific significance to hunting the mountains in this region.

If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer them or point you in the right direction.

I have had good experiences with Woodhaven calls. I have a few pots and they sound good. There are several good pot call makers. Gooserbat makes a good call. A lot of times people have a specialty they do. Old Gobbler has good call forums.

Do you have a website set up @String Music ?

edit to add I have only purchased Woodhaven mouth calls and I do like those. I don't have an expansive set of pot calls by any means but i tend to agree with most here that you can get as much, if not more call for less money than the woodhaven pots.

I hope the nwtf convention is back to normal next year because it was great to be able to sample a bunch of calls and meet the guys making them. I met Sam (?) from Gooserbat last year and had a great visit, ended up with one of his pot calls and a sample pack of mouth calls.

No website yet. I have most of my calls on my personal Facebook page and also on my YouTube page. I can also text you soundfiles if neither of those options work for you. You can send me a PM and we can swap numbers.
