Ok so most of you know i have jumped on the htl bandwagon for my 10 gauge and it holds really good patterns, but would it be a good idea to load a lead shell behind that hevi load to spread out more on a wounded maybe running or flying flopping bird?

Yep.... You should have him with the first shot period.... but should you have to take a second finishing shot, might as well send lead his way.... cheaper that way.

See I see it the other way. If you are shooting HTL and you need a follow up shot then lead prob won't do much. I mean if the shot was questionable for a hevi load why would something less then hevi do much good? You see what I'm getting at?

I do something similar to that. At the beginning of season, my gun is always loaded with a Nitro shell first, and then Magnum Blend to follow if needed. At the end of season, my gun consists of whatever shells I have left as I typically do not go out and purchase new shells last two weeks.

I see exactly what your getting at. And i know the max ranges of my gun but what im saying if maybe i pull off at 20 yards and poi wasnt as good as i wanted i could spread the next shell out to help put him on the ground

I know what you meant rock I just meant more in that I want the best shells each time no matter what position they are in my gun.

If I pull the first one I want a hevi load to follow it as well. No biggie either way it's just a personal preference.
With that said I have not shot 2x at 1 bird in 15 years. I have missed in that time just never put a 2nd round downrange after the miss.

I just load up with the Magnum blends and hope for the best. If I cant kill him with the first shot odds are I cant kill him with the second shot. If I do hit him the first time I will empty the gun trying to put him down ;)
