Got my 10yr old a Mossberg 500 super bantam. I'm looking for some good suggestions on something that isn't going to kick his butt. He has a small frame and I don't want to give him any fears this early.

Let him shoot it a few time with the lightest loads you have. Day of the hunt slip in the turkey loads. If he shoots it at a turkey he will never feel the difference

What he said. My son has the same gun and killed his first when he was 8. He'll be 11 the middle of next month and weighs 80 lbs so then he was probably 60ish. I let him shoot it with 2 3/4 shells and the morning of the hunt put 3" winchester supreme 5's in it and he never knew the difference when that bird hit the ground.

I did that last year with a friends full size. After holding it up for a half hour trying to get a shot at an uncooperative turkey he shot. His little arms were like jello and I don't think he had the gun pulled in tight. So it hit him pretty hard and pinned him to the tree. I got him a shooting stick set up now so maybe things will go better.

I guess the chances of either you or maybe a friend of yours could pick these up from me and then get them to you from where I live but I thought Id ask. I have some brand new (box of 10) Winchester Magnum Loads 20 ga., 3 inch, 5 shot. I think we paid 10.00 for them. He wouldnt want to start off shooting these Im sure. Maybe he can shoot them later when he is ready so no big hurry on this end either. My youngest son let my wife buy these for him and he messed up and got the 3 inch rather than 2-3/4 chamber. His old single shot only shoots 2-3/4. For safety reasons I just cant take the chance on letting him shoot them in that gun. WalMart said all ammo sales are final.
Just let me know or shoot me a PM. We will be in Dickson tomorrow around 11:00 if that helps.

I'll agree with the comments on not letting them practice with turkey loads but rather "sneak" one in during the hunt. I did that with my daughter and it was too much for her. We were in a blind and she had to stand to shoot, it knocked her to the back of the blind. Most kids never notice it though.

After that I started searching for a light turkey load and so far the winner is Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 20 gauge 2 3/4 7.5 shot. I also think the low recoil 20 gauge Hevi shell would be really good too but ain't tried them.

Thanks for the offer PRB. Unfortunately I can't get over that way tomorrow.
No problem. You can get them later if I still have them. Im not in a big hurry to get rid of them. I want them to go for a good purpose. I dont live far from Dickson.
Just let me know later if that helps.

Well I ended up getting him some Winchester double X 3" 1 5/8oz #5 ( I used the 12 ga version last year myself). And couldn't resist the 20 ga undertaker choke for him. I also picked up a cheap box of bird shot to take him target shooting this weekend.
