Interested in hearing user preferences for either 3mm or 8mm MOA dot size
specifically regarding the Burris Fastfire III for turkey hunting.

I'm getting a new one, and am torn between whether to go with 3mm or 8mm.
Am wishing there was something in between (like 4 or 5mm).

Should add I'm a big Burris fan, love the Fastfire's size
and proven reliability, features. Leupold has something similar,
but it has a 2.5mm MOA dot.
Other brands are just larger and/or lower quality glass.

Plan to stick with the Fastfire, just curious what other Fastfire users
think about 3mm vs. 8mm aimpoints.

I use a 3mm dot. Much smaller aimpoint for increased accuracy at 30y and out. Never had trouble seeing the tiny dot in bright sunlight even. My eyes are excellent, however. Not sure if 8mm would be better for poor eyesight, but I bet an 8mm dot is going to completely cover 6inches diameter at 40y.

My "run & gun" 20ga turkey set-up currently has a 4mm dot with the older version Fastfire II.

One feature I like about the Fastfires is how they quickly self-adjust dot brightness to the lighting. No messing with little clicking knobs, requiring movement.

But sometimes, when you quickly turn from heavy shade to bright sunlight, it takes a second for the dot to brighten up, and that's why I'm wondering if the 3mm would be a little harder to quickly "find" in that split second.

I started with the 8, ended up with the 3. Like the smaller dot a lot better. Helps with accuracy.

My vote is 3 moa with circle.

The new FF4 has toggle capability between 3 moa and 11 moa, as well as those with circles.

Wow! Thanks for posting that Andy!
Don't know how I missed seeing this somewhere!
Going to be a new FF4 for me.

I believe the 3 moa "with circle" will be a great replacement for the 4 moa "dot" I've been using.

Other features of the FF4 include
  • Brighter aiming point with longer battery life
  • Bigger sight window for faster target acquisition
  • Removable weather shield that stays attached when slide-mounted
Of course, it's a bit more pricey than the FF3, but comparably priced to a less featured Leupold.

I have two Swampfox Kingslayer with the circle around the dot. They have the choice of red or green . For some reason the green shows up better for me. I agree with Andy if the FF 4 has that feature I believe you will really like it. I know I have a Nikon with the 3 moa red dot and I like the Kingslayer better that has the circle around it.

LBL - I have a Holosun 507c (red) that has pretty much same reticle options as the new FF4, and it's a quality product as well. It comes in green as well. Food for thought.

Unfortunately, looks like this new FF4 isn't going to become available until after this year's turkey season.
Just spoke to a gentleman more in the know than myself and he stated FF4 should be available any day now. He said he expected to have his in next 1-2 weeks, and would send me a message as soon as he receives his FF4. I'll shoot you a message as soon as I hear from him or find them in stock.

if I wanted a circle dot ,I would take a look at the Swampfox Kingslayer. Great company to deal with , 50,000 shot /lifetime warranty and responded to every question and contact card I sent before buying. The thing is very similar to the fastfire but I went with the Kingslayer because of the circle dot and they had the green or red option. They always seem to have a code for a percentage off if you just check the internet. Obviously the company name is For Frances Marion AKA " Swampfox" a revolutionary war hero. Several of the products have historical or military names associated with them. There are discounts for military and police also. You can check that out on their website. Just another thought if you like the circle dot and can't get the FF4 that you want.
