We do this every year but I've noticed over the years more smaller bores which is completely different than what many of us have seen/carried over the years. ADRs note about the 20ga SS was setting up got me curious. Post up a pic of your goto gun this spring, short description, and what you're shooting out of it if you don't mind.

I don't have a pic of the gun handy but it's a Remington 870 compact 20ga, Burris Fast Fire 3 and Carlsons .555 choke with Federal #9 TSS. Here's 20 and 40 yard patterns.

Walmart special I bought 3 years ago. $239. 20g 870 youth compact with. 562 sumtoy, vortex venom. Drilled and tapped with EGW picatinny rail.

Federal TSS #9s. 16 birds in past 2 seasons. I may never use my 10g again.

That's what I'm talkin'bout mega. 20 to 30 years ago it was a bunch of 12s and right many 10s. Then a few more 20s but still mostly still 12s. The last few years seeing way more 20s, some 16s, 28s, and even 410s now gaining a following.

No doubt Boll Weevil. One upon a time the 10g was unbeatable. But add 25 years on me and I'm grateful I can get the same killing power out of a gun that weighs less than half.

I thought I might miss having a semi auto, but going to a pump hasn't bothered me a bit. Everything dies on the first trigger pull (save for a couple misses I made last year after changing shells without rechecking POI), and have not needed a 2nd shot yet.

I'm a huge rifle enthusiast and not as well versed on shotguns. The popularity of deer rifles is shifting to smaller bores also. I've got a 10ga, 12ga and a 20ga. Hardly use the 20 ga much. I guess I use the 12 the most. I just wonder why the shift to smaller? I do like some of the smaller bore rifles. There's probably going to come a time in my old age when I would rather shoot a 20 than a 12. I'm already there with 30 cal rifles. I think I'm done with anything larger than a 7mm bore. But 10 years ago, it didn't make a bit of difference, I would be johnny on the spot to shoot a 300 win mag or 10 gauge for rounds on end.

I am going to carry 3 different guns this year for the most part. The Stoeger 3020 with , Savage 301T 410 and The Mossberg Sa 20 Turkey thug. I shoot Federal TSS #9 out of each . I have too many! I may put a Tri star raptor 20 gauge in the classifieds but I hate to let it go, however it sit in the safe all last season!

Gonna be carrying a Winchester SX3 shooting Winchester Lonbeard 3 1/2" #5's. My son has a Mossberg 500 20 gauge that I bought when he was younger. Killed a bird at 8 and it's just not his thing and hasn't been in several years. He'll be 18 next month and I kept it so may tote it a time or two.

I use an 870 also. Have used a 12ga for yrs but thinking about going to my 20ga with TSS but will likely use 7.5 shot. But won't make the change until I can spend some time patterning with different chokes...... all of this to save less than a pound carry weight???

Nothing fancy. The old 870 Supermag 12 gauge I bought probably 18 or so years ago. I bought the cheap Jellyhead choke the same day. Winchester Supreme 3 inch, 2 ounces of #5. May have caught lightning in a bottle with it. I don't want to mess with what works. Good patterns. Dead birds.

... I just wonder why the shift to smaller?...
It's a way to save weight for those of us getting older but who still hike 5 to 8 miles a day turkey hunting.

The smaller guns are also more maneuverable since they are shorter and lighter. Also easier to hold at the ready position longer as a bird is coming in.

One upon a time, all those advantages sacrificed killing power. Now you can have the best of both worlds with TSS.

Going smaller isn't a recoil thing for most. Recoil is at the bottom of the list, unless you are taking kids.
