I've delayed making this post, mainly because I didn't know where to begin. Last week four of us - me, Ed McCoy, Charlie Davis and Ross Malone - hooked up with Aaron Barton, owner of Barton Outfitters. Over two days - fishing Enid Lake one day and Sardis Lake the next, the four of us split up and fished with four different guides. We fished a wide variety of patterns - wading, spider-rigging and livescoping. We caught fish every way, but Charlie Davis probably had the best success Livescoping with Guide Andy Houston on Sardis. They kept 17 crappie, probably averaging 1.5 lbs. each, topped by a solid 2-pounder. Wading was not as productive as we would have liked, but I LOVED doing it. It was the first time I've ever had the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with crappie in shallow water, fishing in one-to-two-feet of water the entire time. We struggled to find keepers but had good numbers of "short fish" (under the legal size limit). REMEMBER, out there the minimum size limit is 12-inches-plus. We threw back LOTS of 11.5 inch crappie - fish that we would have been bragging about in Chickamauga Lake. It was a fun and enlightening North Mississippi crappie excursion. If you want to try it, check out Barton Outfitters. They'll work hard to put you big crappie.

Go to one of the oxbow lakes along the Mississippi River and wade in the buck brush. I started doing that 30 years ago and it is very addictive.

Never really liked wade fishing at Sardis. We had a place near Holiday Lodge for over 20 years and only wade fished a few times.

Sardis is a great fishery but nothing like it was 20-30 years ago.

You came at the right time to try a variety of techniques, but the worst time for livescoping. So many fish on the banks spawning, rising muddy water, and lots of wind makes this time of year much more challenging. Come back after the spawn is over and the fish have settled in to their summer patterns and you can slay them scoping. I'm not familiar with the guide you used, but if I was going livescoping with a guide at Sardis, Enid, or Grenada I'd call Patrick Stone. He is unbelievable. As a guy that scopes on Sardis a lot, he made a video that completely blows my mind. Watch this if you want to have your mind blown:

Awesome! I been following some guys on FB that have been wearing them out wading. Would love to try it one day
Haven't done it in 40 years, but use to a lot when lived in Vicksburg. Eagle lake had tons of bushes & cypress that extended 100 yds or so from bank. Impenetrable with boat but you could slay them wading. Lots of cottonmouths too! After first time, I went to pawn shop and bought cheapest .22 pistol they had. Loaded it with rat shot and hung around my neck with lanyard 😂
