Catfish were active this morning

Man that was probably a lot of fun but I can't eat them out of lakes or rivers anymore. They taste terrible in my opinion. I have ponds behind the house that I keep them between 20-30 inches and they are delicious. Don't know what has happened because I use to eat them all the time but haven't ate a good tasting river cat in many years just can't stomach them. Hope yours is tasty though congratulations on a nice haul.

See… I'm the opposite. I can't eat pond fish. Very odd.

Wow never heard that. Most people love pond cats because how clean they are. I've got a spring fed pond that flows constant. It's unbelievable the difference in taste. We had a big fish fry last year and I separated what came from the pond and the river and we decided no more cats get kept from the river it didn't even taste like the same fish.

I woukd think a clear flowing cold water river would be better than a muddy stagnant ponds, especially if livestock has access to the pond.

I'm very particular about filleting them and cutting out any red/yellow ect. I'll also soak mine in water with a little white vinegar for a couple days while replacing the water. I'll admit channels aren't my favorite, I'd rather have big blue's or flatheads. I also grill and blacken a bunch of catfish as well. Very rarely I get a piece of bad fish, but when you do I know the taste…. Just like the river water it came out of.

Yes sir, that may have been where I went wrong. I didn't soak it. I also don't keep big fish they just aren't as tasty. That 20 inch range is where it's at.

Never kept a blue cat until I went fishing with Richard with Scenic City, we caught several big blues and we filleted them and they were great. Big white flakes great on the grill or fried. My favorite is blackened and on tacos. I target them regularly now on limb lines.

I never liked catfish until I learned how to clean them. We used to skin them and then just filet them. Very fishy taste. What I've since learned is to filet them, rather than skin them, leaving a thin layer of meat on the skin. Then, get rid of the fat line down the middle of the filet, or anywhere else you see it. All that should be left is perfect white meat. If done correctly, it takes a pretty good size fish to make a meal for four because of so much trimming. A 10-15 lb blue, or flathead is my favorite. Flathead is number 1 on my list. I compared it back to back with crappie and walleye and the catfish was just as good, in my humble opinion. It was a game changer because it's a heck of a lot easier to clean one big cat as opposed to 50 bluegill, or crappie. Don't get me wrong, bluegill and crappie are well worth the hassle.
