20 Gauge

My 870 will have the Rem SF choke or a Sumtoy and HWT 7s... Still haven't decided on a choke for the M2.
I have killed some birds with my 20ga 870 in the past but I am really looking forward to it this year.

First year toting a 20 since I was a kid.
870 compact, sumtoy or tru glo choke(haven't patterned it yet), federal heavyweight 7s, and a Simmons pro diamond scope.

M2 with heavyweight 7s. Choke is still being tested :)

Well, last week I sold my only 12 gauge so all I have are 20s and 410s now. I'll be carrying a Yildiz OU but ain't decided on shells and chokes yet. It will probably be Hevi in the top barrel and 7.5 lead in the bottom.

Remington 870 20 gauge Compact with Sumtoy .562-5 choke and 3" Federal HW 7's. I killed 2 with that setup last year. New for this year is a Winchester SX3 NWTF Cantilever 20 gauge with a FastFire 3 and the 3" Federal HW 7's. I still have to pattern several different chokes with it---Sumtoy .562-5, Trulock HW 7 .570 and the factory turkey choke that came with it, an Xtra Full Turkey .560.

My sons Tristar Raptor youth autoloader, .575 Carlsons, with Fed 3 in 7 HW. 3 out of 4 birds last year killed with it, so I'm gonna hunt with it unless he is with me. Great gun

Question... Why would you carry a 20 instead of a 12 gauge?

First of all they're usually lighter. Secondly, with the right load/choke combination they can pattern as well or better than most 12 gauges. And lastly, just how dead is dead? :stir:

In my opinion, Girly men.... or getting too old to handle a 12ga.... :poke:

just having a little fun... I may go to a 20 at some point... but not yet.

weight mostly and the added challenge (which is minor if any due to modern ammo and chokes). My m2 20 weights only like 6lbs which is much lighter then my SBE2 on those days i cover a few miles in the heat.

i usually split my season in 1/2 with the 12 and 20. last year i killed 2 with each in TN and 1 with each in Bama.

That makes the most sense. Was just curious as to why a 20 over 12.

yeah if you carry a heavy pump (say an 835) for 3-4 miles on a hot day, then carry a 6lb 20 gauge for 3-4 miles on a hot day you will see a HUGE HUGE difference in comfort between those days.

I know what you mean. It is very doable to cover that mileage each day and I normally do if they ain't cooperating. Plus I have some steep hills in the mix. My 835 gets heavy. It's all I have had in the past. I bought a cheap Maverick for dove season. It is considerably lighter and has a 28" barrel. Thinking about buying a choke for it and trying the Heavy 7's. If all goes as planned I am going to get a relaoader and try and work up some 3" loads for next spring.

With the right load/choke combination, the same lethal distance a 12 gauge will.
