3" vs 3.5"

I have shot both and killed turkeys with both 3 inch seems to be more uniform of a pattern to me in my guns.

I've shot plenty of both. One of my guns is a 3" and the other a 3.5". I usually grab my A5 3" stalker, have shot 203 in the 10 @ 40 with 3" #5 LB. However my 3.5" gun doesn't kick any harder than the Browning due to the recoil system of the 3.5. With all that said, I really see no need in 3.5" in the woods. Just a little funner to count holes in paper with.

I use 3" Hevishot blend and haven't had the need for anything more since they all pretty much die when I shoot them, but I only shoot if they are within 50 yards.

my wife started shooting a 3.5" last year too.

Your sweet wife shoots a 3.5" and these men can't take it? :rotf: :poke:

I can take it, but there is no advantage  !

I've only had one shotgun chambered for 3.5" and you would have had to pay me pretty good to shoot one of those long shells in it. It was a very lightweight New England single shot with a turkey barrel and it kicked PLENTY with just 3" shells. My Mossberg 500 doesn't kick as bad, but I don't think I'd shoot 3.5" shells in it even if they did fit.

I have several buddies who say 3 inch is all I need. I have handed my 3 1/2 gun to them a few times they did need it. Lol

So they missed with their 3" and then killed it running away with your 3 1/2" ?

I have a few miscalculated 50+ step kills with 3". I doubt they would have been any deader with a 3 1/2!

I prefer the 3.5" for the bigger payload..... I like having as many pellets downrange to the target as possible.... some of my custom loads haul 2-1/4oz to 2-5/8oz of Hevi and/or TSS shot.... Do they kill any deader than a 3" or regular 3.5"...? No, but I like the extra insurance for when things don't go as planned. I'll shoot 3.5" over a 3" for as long as I can stand it....

absolutely no advantage! a #5 going 1300 fps out of a 3in is the same as going 1300fps out of the 3.5 in :stir: yes there is a few more of them but same energy

There's the math and the facts right there.

No birds hang up in open pines about sixty. They said my gun won't kill at that distance. So I handed them mine and said fire away.

I haven't killed many turkeys, but the sport is calling him up. I don't care what shell it is, past fifty is pushing it, plus unfair to the bird. Yes, you can kill them that far, or farther, but you will also lose them, to run off and die. Its all a preference, I guess. I have tried them all, 10ga. included, since the early seventys. I was lucky to hook up with one of the best turkey hunters I have ever known, passed away now, and he taught me more in one season then I could have learned in ten. He always told me, Shot size is much more important than shell length. Energy is what is needed on the long downrange shots. Not trying at all to get on anyone, shoot whatever you like. But the truth is, a 20ga. is all you need if you get him in right. Hope you all have a great season.

I agree. If he won't come to 50 or less he wins the game and gets to spend another night in a tree.
