Picked up a 12-gauge 870 with 23" barrel yesterday and it has the factory turkey choke in it. Will shoot it first to see how the magblends pattern but wondering what everybody is shooting in their 870's and how they perform.

The honest answer is it depends on the shell you are wanting to shoot.... I have tried several different chokes with several different loads and no two were the same.... It's best to ask what typical conditions are you going to be using it in?

For woods hunting.... I got very good results with the Kicks .665 & Win. Sup. HV #5's.... I have taken several birds with no problems using that set-up.

I only went to Hevi loads and TSS to gain a little more distance for hunting more open areas like fields. I am guessing the Win. Longbeards would prove even more deadly.... for a cheaper set-up.

Here is my 40yd (measured) pattern with the Kicks .665 & Win. Sup. HV 3.5" #5's and Rem. 870sm with 26" barrel (pre-polish):

grizzly is right, in a remington 870 you can't beat a .665 for #5's. also as he says it depends on the size of shot you shoot, Myself I would use a smaller one for 6's but I don't like 6's, I had too many stick into cardboard at 40 yards for me to trust them, seems a little weak for lead. I can't comment on HTL I have never shot it. If the 870 factory choke is a super full it is a .665 I don't know what the X full is.

My 870 mag with 21" barrel likes 3" heavi-13 6's with Indian creek 0.665.
870 supermag with 23" barrel 3.5 mag blends with Indian creek 0.660.

Don't forget the Jellyhead .660 boys. It was made for the Remington barrels.

For all the talk I expected more out of .660/.665 with my 870's.... wasn't terrible, but wasn't jaw dropping either. I tried them with HTL #6's and MagBlends.... may have been better with lead I don't know, didn't try.

Seems like almost everybody has a different opinion so now I'm more confused on what to try. LOL As for how I want to set it up I hunt fields and woods so want to be able to kill one at 50 yards if necessary. I have magblends so I'll try them in whatever and then check out the long beards as I used to shoot winchester supreme 5's with good results.

If you're gonna shoot the Mag Blends I'd recommend the Hevi-Shot brand .662 choke. It patterns the Mag Blends as well as any choke I've shot in my Remington.

I'm just going to tell you right now... from my experience with about 6 different 870sm's. I wouldn't be expecting to kill one at 50yds with an 870 consistantly. You might get lucky.... but even shooting all the chokes and loads I have, I wouldn't say I have found a combo that I would count on to kill a turkey at 50yds. Sure I could get lucky with a few pellets, but that ain't the way I roll....

Now if you want to shell out money for some #9 TSS handloads.... well you might be getting somewhere then.

What's your set up? Got any 50yd pattern pics?

I wont have a gun that wont put one down everytime at 50yds..and thats with lead not HTL.....I still have to do my part of course...Serously HTL just makes the paper look better, Lead will still get it done in the field.
