This am I took my lil bro on youth hunt. It was an exciting morning at daybreak, but came home empty handed..
We parked the fourwheeler and began listening just as it was cracking first light. We heard a bird gobble way back to the SE so we packed up on the four wheeler and drove to where I thought it was. Well I was dead on when we stepped into the hardwoods we were no more than 80 yrds from him. With no cover in the woods right now I was scared to move, so we sat down right at the edge w a pine thicket to our backs. We had 2 birds gobbling aprox 200 yrds N of us, one 80 yrds
SE of us, and 2 NE of us. They were gobbling good and I hadn't heard the first hen, so felt pretty good..
Well I made one soft series of yelps just to let them know where we were, and planned to not make another peep. Well as luck would have it directly E of us maybe 100 yrds I got a nice little series of yelps right back at me. Then some started clucking, and so on. So I knew I had to get them fired up at me and come or it would all be over.... So we cut and yelped back and forth and the toms were goin nuts!
Well I see a bird just coming on the other side of the creek from NE, and one is gobbling right behind him. They walk right between me and those hens just on other side of the creek and jus walk circles, about 55 yrds away. The one in tow was spittn n drumming, full strut the whole time. Then I hear leaves to the North and here comes another just on the other side of creek coming from the N. He walks right to the other long beards. At this point I can't call because I have three gobblers at 55 yrds in plain sight... Then the bird we originally set up on pitches down right to them. All the while there sounds like a dozen hens directly on the other side of them. Well after about 10 min all the hens pitched down right to them, and of course crossing that creek was not on the agenda.. We jus had to watch them walk off..
