I got my first traditional rig a recurve. Addicted already its a whole other world compared to the speed demon compounds!!

I dumped the wheels about 8 years ago and never looked back. It's 10 times easier for me to bow kill deer with my recurve than it ever was with a compound. I believe it's because I don't have to worry about lining up sights and such. Welcome to traditional bow hunting. Hope you love it!

Samick is a good rig I see several of them on the 3d range every shoot and have 3 or 4 in the youth bow set up and they have held up just fine.
if you stick with it long enough you might get interested in other types of bows like long bows or self bows but what you have is the best type to learn on.
focus on your form for now and get the basics down it will make every thing much easer later on.

I think that's like being a little bit pregnant StalkingWolf but a good start down the right road.

something about walking to the stand in the morning with a bow as light as my fly rod

Find a copy of Masters Of The Bare Bow, volume one will give you plenty of how to info for a good start, for a beginner its a super good DVD because it shows sevral different ways to shoot traditional bows, offers mountains of good tips for hunt'n, bow set up, equipment & has some of the biggest names in the biz teach'n you what they know, well worth the money.

And welcome to the tribe, once you get the hang of it your hunt'n life will be changed forever.

(DISCLAIMER: even tho I've gotten somewhat back into my compound this season, I still want to hunt with my recurve, its like leave'n you dog at home & know'n he wants to go also.)

welcome to the Light Side :D. compounds are the Dark Side. lol

What about shooting barebow compound with fingers? I guess I am stuck somewhere in the middle. :)

I started out the same way. Then I realized how much weight I was toting I went ahead and fully committed.

Thanks everyone!! I'm hoping to starting slinging some different broadheads this week and hopefully will have her tuned in for the archery opener.

You ever kill a deer with one you'll be addicted. I took my first deer with a recurve last year, not huge but a trophy nonetheless in my eyes.

I really want to try a recurve . Just ain't had the funds to get set up and going yet .

it's actually cheaper to do than a compound. you can get a good used bow, arrows and few other items cheaper than a compound bow itself costs. and you don't have to upgrade every year. :D

Keep an eye on craigs list, do a search for recurve & thers sevral that pull up, most can be had for cheap.

I noticed 3 rivers archery has a samick sage . With all the accessary for $200ish . From what I have read its s good starter bow . I might go that route . I was thinking of ordering it with the 30 to 35 pound limbs to start out . The upgrade to the 45 to 50 limbs if I decide I could kill a deer with it . Any other suggestions ???
