I occasionally turkey hunt. But one thing that I would like is suggestions on a good mouth call for beginners. More than likely I will be ordering from Amazon. I don't know why places want to charge 7 bucks to ship a darn mouth call. That is ridiculous.

LOTS of good call makers out there. for a beginner I would recommend you try and find a double or 2.5 reed. those are much easier to blow to start with and get use to. I can say 100% though that mouth calls are very very personal choices. What one man loves another man hates. Its all about the cut and how the call fits in your mouth and your calling style. My suggestion is to get a couple different ones if you can with some simple cuts like split v or batwing cuts but stay away from the 3.5 or 4 reed calls till you get the hang of it.

You can get them almost anywhere; Walmart, etc. If you've never used one I'd start out with a single or double reed. They're easier to work with and practice, practice, practice.

I'm not one of those guys that can blow any mouth call you hand me. There's only a few I'm good enough on to take to the woods. Everyone has an opinion. In my opinion, the easiest call to blow that you can buy is a Woodhaven Red Wasp. Woodhavens are a little pricey compared to most, but what's a couple bucks more if it's easier to learn on? I've recommended Red Wasp to other beginners and they liked them. You may hate it, but that's my $0.02.

X2 on woodhaven. It was night and day from what I was trying to learn on the first time I ever tried one. I'm sure there are others out there as well, but I have no reason to to try another brand.

I like the woodhaven split v....

I've called in 18 Tom's to their death with the same call between last year and this year. Bought it on sale at midway at the end of season year before last for 3.99. I've gotten my money's worth out of that call. I have another 4 or 5 new ones in the hunting closet I bought at the same time, should last me 10 years at least.

I've tried a bunch, and I've found the overly raspy calls sound the best to me, but the worst to real birds. I now prefer a call that has a little bit of a squeak to it. Maybe it isn't as threatening to real hens, they seem to be more willing to come investigate it. And no problem calling in toms if they are by themselves. The cadence and volume are WAY more important than how the call sounds in ALL instances.

if you go Woodhaven I'd try the new Ninja series. I've only tried the Ninja Hammer but it is really easy to play. The latex is thinner and requires less air to blow. I like it better than the red wasp. It's plenty raspy but not as raspy as the wasp.

Mouth calls can be tricky! What one man likes another might not can work at all. I will give you some advice when you find the one you like get you several to put up and hold on to. I have used everything from Heart of Dixie, Final roost, cane creek , woodhaven and now flextone. One thing they all have in common is the 3 reed v cut. Again that is what was easiest for me when I learned and I just stuck with it. The flextone spur collector is one I found at Walmart and after turkey season when they marked them down and I bought a bunch! Great call if you like raspy! Get ready for some trial and error but in the end it will be worth it once you find the one you like!

Agree with this 100%. Unlike virtually every other type of call, mouth call preference is unique to the operator. Everyone's mouth shape/dimension is different. I wish there was an easy way to narrow it down, but it's trial and error. Buy good brands and try different ones until you find what you love. I use to buy 5-6 per year until I finally found a couple that are perfect for me. (Tom Teasers "butt naked hen" and "cracked corn" - I don't love the names but love the calls).

I loaded up on the same call when I found some on sale.

Woodhaven Toxic Orange. We took our Jakes club to the NWTF convention and several students bought them and could use them fairly easily. I also have one and have had great results with it.

My two favorites have already been mentioned. Tom teasers "butt naked" hen lol, and the woodhaven toxic ghost cut. Can get super clear soft notes for me personally

Thanks. I know things are subjective, but it would be easier if they listed calls as maybe beginner, intermediate, etc. I just don't want to buy something that may be advanced early on. Gonna try Woodhaven toxic orange as it's $11.99 on amazon prime.
