What do you guys think?

Oh... one more thing... its likewise easy to make mistakes on age based on a single trail cam pic. I have a couple bucks this year that I initially thought were 4.5 based on pics (they were hunched up and at an awkward angle), that i later got perfect broadside pics of and they were most likely 2.5. I wondered how I could possibly have missed them by 2 years in the pics, but they can certainly contort their bodies to make them appear older.

Looking at the teeth from that single pic, I would have guessed 3.5 minimum. He was obviously older than that.

Very nice buck, congratulations.
Here's my thought process... which may or may not be helpful to others...

Looking at that jawbone, I think everyone would agree there is a hint of wear on the 2nd cusp of M1, but basically none on the first cusp... so that puts him as 'maybe 2.5, maybe 3.5'... so then I look at PM3. Almost zero wear on 3rd premolar... a 3.5yo is going to have SOME wear on PM3 as that tooth has been out for well over a year.... that jawbone just doesn't have enough wear on PM3 to call him 3.5... thats why 2.5 is the 'correct' (but likely not accurate) answer.

Sure, tooth wear sucks. But it is what it is. That jawbone would be aged as 2.5 by everyone who knows what they are looking at.

Clearly that buck is mature (4.5 minimum) Congrats on a stud! Post some kill pics!!!!

This is the reason I ask. I thought I had a decent idea of tooth wear but this one had me confused.

Congratulations to her. Your daughter? That's a great buck.

Looking at a single washed out picture on a phone may be misleading, but there did look like wear on the third molar to me.

Not my daughter. My son had 2 football games Saturday and plans with friends Sunday so he didn't want to go. I let a buddy of mine take his daughter. 🤣 my son is sick lol

Absolutely could be wear on M2 based on the pics...

The only thing that goes against wear on M2 is the LACK of wear on PM3 (and there could be wear on PM3 if you had the jawbone in person...but I don't see any in the pic).

We all get taught to just focus on the molars and ignore the premolars... thats the textbook method of aging. But you will find you are way more accurate when also considering wear on the premolars as well.

Well, congratulations to your buddy's daughter then. Hate it for your son, but at least you can feel good knowing who killed the deer.

By the jawbone, 2.5 and possibly 3.5. I would call it 2.5 though like mega said. Keep in mind, that tooth wear only shows a minimum age.

However, from the trail cam pics, I say 4.5+.
