I'm not sure what in the world turkey "reaping" is, or when it became cool but the below decoy has to be a must have for all decoy enthusiasts.

I'd say a few years of this becoming popular and a pile of accidental shootings and decoys may just get outlawed.

I have to ask what is happening to the sport of turkey hunting? Honestly, is the direction the majority of turkey hunters want this sport to go? I'm ally for the if its legal its okay stuff, but gimme a break on this one. Sad, just sad to see this becoming the new in thing

I cant believe you would even post that....just helping spread the foolishness....

You have a point, can't believe it actually exists. I also was completely clueless as to turkey reaping. Add another thing to the list of things I loathe relating to the new era of turkey hunting

Just looks like another gimmick to try and make a dollar off one of the recent cool things seen on YouTube. I love the shots where someone stalks a bird behind a decoy, but being mostly a public land hunter I don't plan to try any time soon. Who cares about the mojo decoy, it's not ruining the sport, just making money off a "fad" or whatever... just carry on...

I agree with you Setterman, just another way the new breed can be cool killing turkeys and not have to learn how to hunt them.
...and dont think the Turkey Reapers dont have a large following either.

How is it cool?

Hunting private land certainly isn't a sure thing for not getting shot, in fact I'd say more people poach during turkey season than any other time of the year. It's why I quit hunting private ground here, I spent all my time fighting with poachers.

There is nothing cool about crawling with a shield to kill a turkey, nothing. Why not learn to hunt rather than just kill? Or is the goal to only kill for the new generation?

Not directing that towards you personally catman

like I said I have no intention of doing it and the decoy is almost as stupid as the squealing hen, but I still thought it was cool when I saw someone crawl close enough to almost grab the birds neck before the gobbler figured it out. It's not my style of hunting and obviously not yours either but it must be a rush to have a boss bird come that close thinking you are another turkey.

I'm sure it is a rush, but is it a hunt? I say no, it's just killing.

sure it's a hunt, you don't just hold a decoy and walk up to any turkey.... I would think you have to find a boss gobbler and still get it just right so he doesn't see you behind the deke... Belly crawling a field while staying hidden behind a tail fan doesn't seem like plain killing to me...

Also by that logic I'd say calling a lonely 2 year old isn't much of a hunt either, you are fooling a dumb young bird that you are another turkey and he often comes in on a string... Doesn't seem too much different to me, except that no dekes are involved

Calling any gobbler in, in the spring, is going against nature. Naturally the hens go to the gobbler. However by using the reaping technique you are manipulating male birds natural agressive nature....So, I think there is alot of differences in the comparison you make.....

The old wives tale that two year old birds just run to the gun is completely false. If anything they can be the hardest birds to kill because they are beaten into submission and therefore afraid to approach most hens. The easiest birds I've killed over the past few years are hooked spur beasts that ran me over when they ended up alone.

Your comparison in my opinion is not even close. there's so much that goes into calling a bird down the gun barrel versus crawling up on one that the two are not even in the same conversation.

I'd venture to say its not against nature for a lone 2 year old to go to the hen. The bird wants some tail. I'm just saying dont be hating on other techniques that obviously need some level of skill to do, just because it isn't the way you hunt. "Reaping" (a really stupid term I think) is not my way of hunting but I'm not hating on anyone for doing it. If I were to shoot one of the birds eating corn behind my house, assuming baiting were legal, that would be my definition of killing and not hunting.

It just seems more and more, gimmicky "products" and their advertising are doing their best to turn the sport of hunting more into simply shooting.

Imo, this "warning" is greatly understated.

WARNING This decoy makes the hunter look like a long beard, boss gobbler. Do NOT use on public land, leases or anywhere other hunters might be present and could mistake you for a real turkey! Use only in very controlled hunting areas.

I would counter "other hunters" might be present anywhere you choose to hunt, and private land can sometimes be more dangerous than public. More poachers trespass and poach turkeys than any other game. At least on public land, you expect there to be another hunter, maybe one with decoys. It also wouldn't take much in terms of grass, weeds, or a log between the shooter and the decoy to make those orange strips unseen.

There also seems to be quite a few turkey poachers using centerfire rifles, so I'd be afraid to use this particular decoy anywhere. And if you think those "orange" strips negate any safety concerns, think again. There's a good chance a decoy shooter will only see the decoy's head and/or top of the back before he shoots. This is particularly true with most set-ups whereby hunters tend to "set-up" on at least a slightly elevated spot, as the first thing anything (human or turkey) sees approaching from either direction, is the top of a head.

That's scary, won't find me using that tactic, although it looks fun and like a rush. Turkey hunting has never been very "hard" to me, I don't have any intention of making it "easier" than what it already is.... granted we have a huge abundance of turkey where I hunt.

Seems to be the case for some, although I'd say this applies more to the less experienced or novices of all ages, instead of just the latest generation.

"Easy" is being promoted more than the "challenge" by most product advertising.

But as most hunters mature, they appreciate the journey of the hunt more than the number of kills, and get little or nothing from simply killing without the hunting. What is the personal satisfaction of killing a pig in a pen? IMO, hunting is more about the pursuit than than how many are killed.

Yet, if there were never any killing with hunting, or at least the opportunity for it, really wouldn't be hunting. At the same time, I believe we should appreciate the differences between shooting, killing, and hunting.

Let me take a different approach for a second.

what are WE (traditional hunters) doing to keep that tradition alive?? are we doing all we can do to pass that along to other generations?? I think that is a very very good questions as it goes with anything...can we really complain about it if we are not really trying to do anything about it?

just a devils advocate approach is all, I personally don't like the way its going and try to do my best to show some younger kids how it once was especially my son.
