At our matches, especially when it's cold, I hate trying to dig ammo out of the little crate they come in. I've seen caddy's at matches and I found some online for $30-40.

I am no wood worker but I had some walnut laying around and a new router. It got away from me a few times at the end but for free it will be sufficient.

Now I need to finish it with some oil.

Can't you just drill .22LR sized holes with a drill press, spaced out enough to be able to handle them easily at a match, like a loading block? There may even be a 3d printed block that could be modified for .22LR

Probably

This just lets you take your match ammo out of the box and drop in the caddy without touching every round.

Something that concerns me about how 22 ammo is stored other than in it's original container is that if the bottom of the hole for each individual round is closed all manner of contaminants can get in there ESPECIALLY if the ammo has an oily type of lube like Lapua or SK. That junk then transfers to the bullet, then to the weapon chamber and then into the bore. I'm fairly fanatical about keeping my bullets free of debris and junk. There's a guy on another forum that makes and sells some very nice ammo trays with individual holes for the rounds but I can't make myself buy/use one due to them being a debris trap. Just think of little particles of who knows what blowing around at the range and ending up in the individual, lube coated holes in trays like the red one pictured here and the ones for sale on the other site. Not for me.

I 3d printed some 22 lr holders for a 30 cal ammo can for my bulk ammo.
Using the range box, open the lid one row and dump, I'll get 10 rounds in my hand.

Something like this is what the OP created?

Yep, that's pretty much what I made.
So does that black block come with the ammo, or is it something that you have to transfer the ammo to? I don't shoot matches so that is new to me, and now I get the concept (raised rows), but just wondered if the block was the standard for match .22 ammo.

I've had a few of the 50 round boxes of .22lr come in a plastic holder in the box.

It's just the container than ammo comes in. You just slide it out of the box and set it into the holder with staggered rows so you can grab ammo easier. Our matches are timed so less time digging for rounds is more time you have to be on target.
