Today, really needed to be the day for me. Tomorrow there are BLIZZARD warnings, with winds potentially 80 mph! From 3" to 10" of snow is projected. I'm pretty sure my chances of getting a gobbler before Monday are shot. However, in the morning there may be a window, so I'm planning on staying in the blind as long as possible weather permitting.
However, today was it for my brother in law. I set up two blinds yesterday, one in a place where I saw several turkeys near the railroad tracks, and another where I've seen turkeys everyday this week. Sure thing right? Well my spot, I was SURROUNDED by turkeys, but not a single one came my way. They hooked up with hens and headed north away from me.
When we drove in, we busted a few groups of turkeys. They had roosted near the barn that we used to hide the truck. Still we proceeded as planned with me taking the area to the north and Kyle taking the area near the barn. It wasn't long after daylight broke that a group of hens with a single gobbler arrived in the field. The gobbler was aggressive and could not stand Kyle's Avian X Jake decoy. He moved in rapidly and attacked it! Kyle, decided to shoot him when his back was turned. The crossbow arrow hit him in the back and burst out its side. He was using a normal 125 grain, three bladed broadhead, I think it was a Walmart special. The turkey did not like it. It took a minute to expire, but it was mortally wounded.
I was still in the other blind, but the cold front is starting to come. I was shivering so badly, that I told Kyle I'd just as soon go. It turned out to be the right thing as there were no turkeys spotted all day (I went back after I warmed up and added clothing). We went to another farm very late in the day. By then the wind was roaring along at about 30 mph. Turkeys may have been passing us in the brush but weren't vocal at all. Finally, three hens appeared from seemingly nowhere, and flew up right above my head.
