Yep 12, 3.5" #6 longbeard xr
It really not that bad. I've shot some mossberg ulti mag that rattled my teeth but this gun don't. I just like it. Can't explain it.Sure don't know how anyone could "like" such heavy recoil for so little gain in range.
I can say that shooting 1 1/2 oz of TSS in my 20 gauges
And truly "like" the mild recoil.
When I experimented with various 12 ga 3 1/2" turkey loads (years ago), with my Mossberg 935, the recoil wasn't too bad up to @ 1 3/4 & 1 7/8 oz payloads. But could definately tell a significant increase in "kick" going to the 2 oz Winchester Extended Range loads of those days. When I tried 2 1/4 oz loads, found it bone-jarring, even with a gas-operated autoloader.
No desire to try a 2 1/2 oz load! Nor to carry a heavy 12 ga gun.
If you misjudge 50 and he's 60 he's still dead! You dang right. I still have the 870 super mag pushing 2 1/2 oz of TSS rolled by yours truly. Is it overkill? Absolutely but I like it. If I misjudge 40 and he's 45 it dont matter.
I always hear this but is a pound or two really that big a deal?Nor to carry a heavy 12 ga gun.
A pound or two may not seem like that much on paper, but it seems pretty dramatic in the field.I always hear this but is a pound or two really that big a deal?
It seems we have something in common...Mossberg 835...so i can make sure shoulder and jaw are dislocated on every shot...lol
20ga 3in tss or 410 3in tss for me. No more 3.5 12ga shoulder killers
Friend bought the first 835 I ever saw in early 90's and he was shooting a turkey with 3.5 that year, the turkey had him kinda twisted around to get the shot off and the gun kicked him in the nose/jaw.... he's down on his knees with blood pouring outta his nose and the turkey comes flopping and rolling down the hill that was the end of his 3.5'' days.if you've never shot a mossberg 535 with 3.5" turkey loads, you haven't been truly kicked in the teeth!
But did he die though?Friend bought the first 835 I ever saw in early 90's and he was shooting a turkey with 3.5 that year, the turkey had him kinda twisted around to get the shot off and the gun kicked him in the nose/jaw.... he's down on his knees with blood pouring outta his nose and the turkey comes flopping and rolling down the hill that was the end of his 3.5'' days.
Yep!I was looking in my gun case yesterday and ran across a box of these 3.5" shells I used to shoot in a Rem. 870. Got me wondering if anyone still shoots these?
One of the 2 died, the other was just severely wounded! But did he die though?
I can't imagine a 3.5'' outta a Topper! That could really be dangerous, like torn ligaments or broken collar bone. My turkey gun is a Topper but I shoot 2 3/4 - 1 1/4 copper plated 7.5. at 1220 fps.15 years ago my BILcalled asking me to go turkey hunting at his place. Said he shot one with his 1100 and it got up and ran off. I loaned him my H&R turkey topper single shot and some 3 1/2" shells. He said he checked pattern on it. The next weekend we hunted and he was carrying an 835 like mine. I asked why he wasn't using the topper and he said "That thing is the devil".
As for the old 835, I sold mine years ago. I'm not recoil sensitive but Winchester quit making the shells I shot in it so I sold it. Honestly, I enjoy turkey hunting with my crossbow more.
8 shells plus what's in the gun??? You are going to war with those timber chickens!Lastly, if you're carrying 8 extra shells in your vest, there's another 1/2 lb less weight you're carrying with a 20 vs a 12.
