I just got home from work , I'm tired , and I got to thinkin on my way home. Usually when that combination comes together its best that I keep my thoughts to myself but I am goin to let this one fly.
This is for all the self proclaimed "I hunt for the meat" hunters out there. I fall in this category so I am not trying to pick on or step on anyones toes with this thread , just would like ya'lls thoughts and give you something to think about. I have always hunted for the meat and if that meat had a nice rack attached to it then that was just icing on the cake. So , I am in my stand and a lone fawn walks in offering a great shot , I am a meat hunter so do I shoot? First off I have had fawn meat and it was probably the best deer meat I ever ate without a doubt. To answer the question , no I don't shoot. As a matter of fact , I have passed up sure kill shots at mature does just because she had a fawn with her. So am I a true meat hunter , I would have to say that I am not. What are yalls thoughts on this ?

Yes you're a true meat hunter. You just don't feel comfortable doing something you don't feel is right. You don't have to be a bloodthirsty bullet slinger to be a meat hunter.

Why do we as hunters have to categorize every single decision ?

If its legal and makes you happy, shoot it, eat it and enjoy.

Trying to make everything in life into some grand statement takes a lot of joy out of life.

For example.... If you decide you are a "Trophy" hunter then everything else is a bit of a disappointment by your own definition.

Hunters seem to do this more than any other group I have associated with.

Im a Trophy hunter, rage shooter, Matthews,Hoyt,PSE shooter, a sentloc guy, I only hunt from a summit, etc.....

I think we confuse the marketing hype and self aggrandizement with the joy of hunting.

Sorry. I was feeling kinda Zen this morning.

Nope, Im a trophy hunter but kill plenty of does because it's part of management, however I kill just about any buck 4.5 or older.

I agree. I am just a hunter. I don't classify myself as anything except that. I make my own decisions on what to do when the animal I am hunting is in my sights.

papaw -- I think your reply to "fishboy" was a bit harsh and out of line. I didn't see anything that he said to justify such a response from you. You opened a discussion via thread wanting people's thoughts...and fishboy gave you his thoughts. I agree with everything he said.

I'm just a hunter and not in any "camp" or "inner circle". Sometimes I might go most all season passing up small bucks that I could have easily killed...and then one day be feeling "bloody" and pop the first thing that's legal, regardless of size. If I want to kill it, I will. If I'm hunting and a doe with fawns comes in...I'm not cold hearted. I will kill the doe and hope it confuses the fawns enough to stick around so I can take out the whole family to keep them from missing their momma :-) I'm thoughtful that way.

Very well said. Hunters tend to be their own worst enemies.

Deciding NOT to kill a fawn does not mean you're not a "meat" hunter. May just mean you're not REAL hungry. :)
(Or it could mean you don't necessarily consider ANY deer a trophy.)

When I decide not to kill a fawn, it may just mean I don't need that particular meat badly enough that I would want to kill a fawn. It could also mean I'd prefer to mess with a 90-lb doe INSTEAD of a 35-lb fawn, i.e. if I'm going to mess with field dressing, dragging, and processing, would prefer an adult deer to a fawn. In other words, you may end up with more meat by NOT killing that fawn.

I think most of us are hunting for a multitude of reasons, with getting the meat, or getting the antlers, being two of those reasons. For some it's more about the meat than the antlers, but if you eat the meat, that alone still makes you a "meat" hunter.

Maybe we should all just call ourselves "hunters". :)
And, yes, most of us do eat the meat.

I would classify myself as a hunter. No other reason then I do a little of both meat hunting and horn hunting. I kill as much as my family needs and if I am feeling that day like putting in some extra effort I will kill one or two to donate. I'm starting to pass on more and more bucks now more than ever but my overall goal is not to kill a certain class or age buck but one at the moment I feel like shooting. Not that I get those moments to often but wish I did. right now I'm having a blast hunting this way. If it starts not being fun then I will change tactics to make it fun.

A man after my own heart.

And from a management perspective, I am pretty sure a doe fawn is a doe. Tender or not.

We call it VEALISON!

AMEN

I don't consider myself a meat hunter or a trophy hunter, just a deer hunter. I don't shoot fawns or a doe with a fawn. I don't shoot yearling bucks.

I have my own standards and stick to them for the most part. I really don't care what anyone else shoots, that would be their choice.

Deer hunting is supposed to be fun and that is why I go. I don't need to kill anything to enjoy myself. When it becomes a chore, I will do something else.

I shoot enough does to feed my family and love venison . I hold out for mature bucks as well . Not sure what sub category I fit into ?
I would rather just be called a bow hunter .
