Are you old school or new school?

Just arrived at camp in Bama, and as we are sitting around talking turkeys thus subject came up as usual. I'm fortunate to be around a bunch of long time turkey killers here and all of them are like me. Which is why we share time in the woods together I reckon.

non gobbling birds get a pass, no ambushing, no fanning, no dekes, no blinds, no limb shooting, and no hen killing.

For a turkey to die he has to speak, come to a call, and be within 35 yards or so. If not he gets a pass

If he gobbles once and comes in 30 minutes later does that count? If I was at turkey camp I believe I would be enjoying a fire and a glass of fine whiskey or some other beverage and trying to forget about those us that have to wait another 2+ weeks.

Long since forgotten about you fools :rotf:

If he gobbles at my calling he dies whether it's once or a hundred times

I love hearing them gobble almost more than I enjoy eating them but IMO a silent bird is much more of a challenge to hunt than one that tells you where he is.

When I think of old school hunters I think of a guy sitting up against a tree for hours with a box call yelping 3 times ever 30 mins. I know that's not what your saying but by your description I'm an old school type of turkey hunter. No decoys or blinds, just me my gun and a few calls. Oh and a couple grocery bags stuffed in my pocket so I can pick some mushrooms on my way out of the woods.
never forget the grocery bags, or a mesh bag, those mushrooms can be anywhere. Last year I called up multiple toms and shot one of them while toting a sack full of 90+ morels that I picked while I was waiting for a bird to fire up.

Woo hoo...been waiting on a eating turkey topic to come up! I don't wanna hijack my own thread but I'm dead serious; wildturkeybird cooked right is just about as good as it gets.

I was down to my last pair of legs and thighes from the freezer a few weeks back and went for the "taste straight up like delicious yummy buckrabbit " recipe. Boiled, strip the meat off the spindles, salt, pepper, flour, fry, and a little hot sauce for good measure.

Seriously though...legs and thighs is good. :)

I so wish I had morels like years past. 2 old dying trees we called the Raggedy Elms produced 111 one morning...vest pockets, headnet, and a ratty Jones style hat totally packed.

If I ever come across a spot like that again...I'll run Angus cattle proof electric ribbon wire around it and set C-4.

check other spots, they aren't just around dying trees.

About turkey legs, yes they are overlooked and very good eating. I boil mine as well, but add BBQ sauce and make sammiches

I'm still just a turkey killer and will use almost any legal means I have never shot one off roost. I would love to call myself a turkey hunter someday.

the very reason I don't feel bad about shooting a jake. My wife can roast a young bird that is the most succulent, juicy and tender turkey you could ever imagine. :super:
