What is the average distance that you shoot turkeys at? Trying to get some opinions why people want to pattern their turkey guns at 40 yards or farther and kill mostly between 20 and 30 yards?

20 to 30 yards for me. ;)

There is not a problem with your question.
The problem will arise with the answers to your question.

Someone will talk about effectively killing a turkey at say, 64 yards and then the holier than thou carry overs from deer hunting eliteist will pounce on them like a pack of rabid wolves.

I never shoot a turkey past 15 yards and never shoot a deer over 12 yards with a bow or over 48 yards with a firearm.
Those are the only "acceptable" answers.....

I apologize, I am in a very foul mood and kinda took it out on your thread... I really am sorry but I ain't gonna delete because, well I am right. ;)

The closer they are the better! If i could have it my way i would simply lean up and stick the barel to its neck. :D

People pattern out just in case. I shot one at 52 yards a few years back because I knew what my gun would do and I had not killed on yet. The bird got nervous and started to walk away. I shoot one as soon as I think he is close enough. I mark distance with decoys. Set them up at 30 yrds then I have a distance mark for when I think I can shoot.

I shoot most at 25 yards or less but have spent a fortune on patterning chokes and shells.I have fun doing it and aftering seeing some guys getting great numbers at 40 yards I wanted to be able to do it too.I have taken shots that I thought were closer and got the turkey but it was luck.I want to make sure if I have a hung up bird or think its 40 and its 50 yards I have a great pattern to put the bird down.

My average is probably around 30 yds. The reason I shoot at 40 and 50 yds is so that I will feel comfortable shooting those distances if I need to.

I really dont get why your asking this question

Why would you want to shoot your deer rifle at 200 + yds when your average kill is 70yds

Thats funny.got me to thinking. If someone makes a 200 yard shot on a deer then people say they made a good shot.If people kill a turkey at 50 yards people say they suck at calling and are unethical :D

I get all the stuff about patterning your gun, to see what the effective range is, just simply bored and got to thinking about how much I have spent on shells, chokes and sore shoulders, just thought it was a little humorious how many people like myself go through patterning every year before turkey season trying to get just a little better pattern at the longer ranges. Then end up shooting turkeys that a modified choke with 2 3/4" shells could kill. lol

Maybe all the $$ spent on chokes and shells will payoff when you kill the next state record bird that hung up at 45 yds infront of ya ;) :D

My answer is simple, I would rather know I can kill a turkey at 40-45 yards cleanly, than to have the biggest turkey I have ever seen come in and hang up at 40-45 yards and have to wonder if I can take him or not.....

If they come in closer, that's fine by me, they will be dead just the same.......

I am not going to jump on anyone, but my avg distance is 25 yards. I do not generally take shots over 35 yards, only because it is personal preference. I choose to shoot turkeys up close and personal, and only shoot birds which have fully committed to a call. Sniping at long distances to me, just isn't why I enjoy the sport.

i love to watch them flog the decoys, i set my decoys up at 20 and if they are 10 or so yards behind them i know it's close to 30 and that is my desired range. sometimes i get so jittery once they cross that 30 threshold...boom

Exactly! And when a tom will not come closer than 40 yards, then my hat's off to him. He has won that round! Does that make me one of those holier than thou "eliteists"? :D

My avg is probably 35-40, with several over that.

I'm impatient, and am always worried about getting busted or something else going wrong. He's already come 100+ yds, so a few more steps means nothing to me.

Plus, if I want to watch a show, I'll not take a gun :D !

20 yards average and no more than 25. I use an 870 with factory choke. Can't seem to invest in a choke that cost 1/3 what I paid for the gun.

Id say 15-20 yds. Longest kill shot was 42 yds. I prefer em close. When I have decoys out I usually set them up at 15 yds.

25 to 30 yards average. I pattern my gun because I want to know its limitations. Can I make an ethical kill at 50 yards? Yes. Do I? No. I don't feel all that comfortable taking that 50 yard shot. Now 40 yards, Boom. Done deal.
