My buddy, his nephew, and myself had planned to hunt he KY opener for several months now. My buddy's daughter had a softball tourney starting Friday and as long as it got rained out he was coming up ASAP. I took Friday off and me and his nephew left out Friday morning. Got the tent set up about 3:30 and just hung out and looked for birds to hunt for the next morning.

Yesterday morning we got set up on a bird that I was hoping we could do something with. Turns out we set up around 3 birds but as luck would have it couldn't ever get them to do anything. We left after a bit and ran to another farm 10 mins away to see if any were out in the field. We sat for a while and decided to grab breakfast before it was over with at my buddy's restaurant down the road. By the time we finished it was about 11:30. I told a few guys in there that we were headed to my property to give it a try that a lot of times the turkeys roost on us, fly down on someone else and mid day come back in to our property.

We walked to a high ridge where I could see our small bottom grass field and also see over into the neighbors big field that the turkeys flock to a lot. Soon as we got there we heard one probably 500 yards away. I reached to grab my slate and realized I dropped my striker on the walk in. I suck at a mouth call so don't own one but the kid said he had one but wasn't too good at it. I told him to give it a try and we'll see what happens. He instantly got a response back from the one far away. We played the back and forth for about 20 mins and then I heard another about 300 yards the other way. Then realized there were 2 birds and they were getting closer. I then spotted 3 in the neighbors field and they were moving our way quick. As soon as they crossed from his property to ours I lost sight of them but knew they were coming up. I had the kid yelp one more time and when the gobbled the last time were within 50 yards. I told him to get ready and as soon as he had a shot to shoot and not worry about me getting one. I heard the leaves moving and knew they were within 20 yards but couldn't see because of a big tree in the way but knew he should be able to see them any second. They closed the distance to 15 yards and he shot. I jumped up and seen his flopping and the other 2 running off and I was able to knock one down about about 35 yards.

So I had a 13 year old call in a turkey for me yesterday and he called his first bird in for himself :).. His first hunt he got to hear 5 or 6 birds, hear the 3 that came into us double and triple gobbling at his calling and seal the deal. It was a great hunt!

His bird was 24 pounds, 8'' beard (had beard rot), 1'' spurs. My bird was 20 pounds, 10'' beard, 1'' spurs.

My buddy got there about 1 and we tried getting on one that was gobbling 200 yards from our camp area but couldn't get in there without getting busted so didn't chance it. Got within 75 yards of one roosted this morning but he flew down with a jake and 2 hens and went the other way.

What a great hunt!

Takes a real man to admit that a 13 yr old kid called in a turkey for him :D ! But, at least you got to direct him on when to call and what type call to make.

What a hunt! Have the hens broken off from the main flocks there or was that just a bachelor group?

It doesn't matter how you sound when calling if they are in the right mood for sure.

Every bird I heard or seen on the roost this weekend had hens with them so most shut up as soon as they hit the ground. I think we just got lucky and caught these 3 about the time the hens left them Saturday. Right place right time helps every time lol.
