Best automatic turkey gun

Try and go to place that has several brands of shotguns and shoulder a few. Read as much as you can about the ones you are interested in. I myself love Benelli and have an M2 w/steadygrip for turkey hunting. I also have a Stoeger 2000 that is a lot less expensive, but it shoots real good and love that too for turkey hunting. There are a lot of great shotguns out there. Just have fun looking for the right gun for you.

I own both the rem. 1187 supermag and a SBE2. They are both awesome guns, but the gas operated remington is much easier on the shoulder.

Yessir Grizzly...the 10 guages dont pattern as well as a 12. I had a Browning Gold 10 that would pattern great out to 35 yards but add 5 to 10 yards and the pattern opened up a LOT. I tried a handfull of chokes and just couldnt get it right past 40 yards. My old 835 Mossy would patten great out to 50...but I just got tired of black eyes every time I pulled the trigger. I shoot a Browning Silver now and the recoil reduction is NICE! As soon as my Rhino choke gets in its back to the patterning board! ;)

Yeah, you certainly need an auto-loader for the turks. It's critical to have that quick second and third shot available!

I was talking to a guy about this same subject the other day.

He was looking into a benilli very seriously but wanted something a little cheaper. He said he got and LOVED a Stoeger 2000, it will only take 3" but that is all you need anyway.

If you know anything about Soteger they are a cheap benilli, they are not made at the same plant but made on the same pattern.

I think he paid $399 at Gander Mt.

Those things kick like the devil. I had one and would plum smack you in the face and kick so hard it would knock the eyes out of your head. They are light and the action is loose.
It isnt gas operated either, inertia. You could drop it on the butt of the gun and the action would open and shut. It kicks as hard as a pump gun.

The dang choke threads were crooked and wouldnt shoot straight. I had to send it back to benelli for them to fix it.

Actually, quite the opposite.

While any shotgun must be patterned to find the optimum combination of choke and shell, the 3 1/2" 10ga generally holds a better pattern than the 3 1/2" 12ga due to the wider shot column. The wider shot column results in less deformation and deflection of the shot as it travells down the barrel.

You should see the pattern my SP-10 throws at 40 yards with regular old winchester supreme #5's!!! No need to spend the bucks on nitro shells.

You know, I've got to laugh at the "need" for 3 1/2" shells and 10 ga guns, and auto loaders. I had an uncle who killed the heck out of gobblers every year with 2 3/4" high brass 7 1/2's, in a side by side choked M and F. Obviously most of us would scoff at that rig nowadays. Maybe most of us are no longer good enough at our sport. LOL

I just went ahead and got an 870 SM for turkey hunting.... I'll save the SP-10 for the geese. Nitro shells are too expensive when a 3.5" #5 will do me just fine at 40 yards.... I mean how far do you really need to shoot anyway..... I thought the skill was getting them in close... ;)

Except that I normally used #5 shot, that was pretty much my "turkey gun" prior to 2008. And it would still be my turkey gun if I could have found a good gunsmith willing to mount a low-power scope on it!

I only went to a new turkey rig in 2008 due to needing optical sights, something easy to mount on most pump & auto shotguns.

Before I was old enough to be allowed to go, my daddy had an old double gun, high top leather lace up boots, a felt hat and smoked a pipe! Right off the cover of a vintage Field and Stream! LOL

I agree with a more open choke they will retain the shot column better...but choked down to turkey choke levels Ive just never been happy with the patterns out of a 10.Im glad somebody has had luck with them. I tried choke and shell combos until I was sick of it.Ive killed lots of turkeys with 3 inch 12 guage...heck even the 20 guage is a decent turkey rig choked down. My boys 20 guage 870 with a Primos choke patterns prety darn good out to 30 yards. I like to call em in close too....but I also like that extra 10 to 15 yard advantage when it comes to that one gobbler that locks up at 50 yards. Been there......done that...... got the T shirt. I guess its all in what youre happy with.Turkey hunting is my passion......but I LOVE eatin turkey more. LOL

Good deal. Heck...I found a box of them last week in one of my safes I will give ya when you come for the turkey killin!
