Biggest public land problems

After years of getting there early and having people park beside me coming in late I have changed tactics. Going in a little late and letting the leave at 9 or 10 guys work for me. Deer are smart enough to figure out hunters pretty quick.
That's the only way to do it. I head to the woods around 10-11am and hunt until dark. Let the other guys push the deer around when they are leaving for lunch and returning for the evening. Since a couple years after the 3 does a day started I will sometimes go a week or longer without seeing a single deer or even hear one blow! The WMAs are hit HARD around here. It makes it hard to keep a youth hunter interested when they just don't see any deer.

If you leave a stand on public land then you better be prepared to let others use it, or take it. You can't hold spots.

If I left anything else on public property. I would expect it to A be turned in to lost and found, B taken.

If I took the time to drag a ladder stand onto public, I would just write it off at end of season.

Of course, I hunt the ground and do just fine.

My 2 cents.

My biggest complaint is not per say with people on it which can be and has been aggravating at times. It's people blasting how great some areas are and the deer populations and the big bucks. In my earlier days of hunting I was guilty of it and even days on here I was guilty of it. Nowadays I may or may not say if I saw a deer or killed a deer. Only my hunting buds and boys know about what I did and didn't see.
Why Houston you'd tell @rem270 wouldn't you ?

I agree with the atv and side by side. They are riding land YOU own. Definitely not other peoples land and most definitely not public land. A deer worth shooting is a deer worth dragging!

I cant imagine anyone toting a ladder stand in and out of public land. You would think climber or loc on and sticks

Cheatham is full of ladder stands. I think people leave them out to "reserve" their spot. It works on me, because I d want the drama.

Yeah well a new experience ion some public today. There is a secluded piece of public nearby to my house. Killed a buck there opening day muzzleloader and noticed only 2 of us was hunting there. I watched where he drove to which is close to a mile from where I was at. I hunted 4 of the 6 days in the same piece of public. Now I may hunt the same area but I never hang on the same tree twice. I follow this guy in this morning and because of the wind I had to make a turn not too far from the area I was hunting. Come up from the south side. I get there and this guy is literally 50 yards from my tree stand had been at. Where has the common curtesy went . I really want to follow him down Saturday first good cold front after a good strong storm system during the rut and hang right beside him. Just so he knows how it feels. The part that made me mad more than anything is that he drove his side by side right through where I was hunting. To get there he drove through a big chunk of bedding cover that I had a 140+ inch buck Tuesday come busting out of with a doe. Whole different story for that day. I have to ask what is wrong with people?

Growing up hunting NF lands, I learned how to treat others on public by my dad and his buddies. I think now days, most hunters probably didn't grow up with mentors teaching them how to treat others. This would be great thing to offer hunters now days.

There are a list of issues to deal with when hunting public land, but the two that burn me to the core is the lack of common courtesy and trash, specifically surveyor ribbon. Can't fix common courtesy though as that's a personality trait, you're either self-centered or you're not. Absolutely 100% wish that ribbon/surveyor tape was banned from public lands. Wouldn't have a problem with it if they would just remove it when they leave, but most won't. When left behind, it is trash plain and simple.

It's public land beat him there if not he has every right to hunt that spot as you do. Setting up beside him is just one of many reasons you created a public post like this lol, but the side by side part definitely sucks but that's just another part of public. My land butts up to public land so I have to deal with people all the dang time who "didn't see" the property signs.

Yep. Scouting last week to a secluded area I like to hunt I was saddened to find a new ribbon trail someone left recently all through the woods. It's the kind with reflective stripes on one side so I left it alone. If It's not down by the end of the season though I'll be picking up their trash for sure, just like I did when post season scouting in an entirely different area early this year. (How dumb can folks be than to tie ribbon to help everyone and they're brother find a good scrape line?!) Hey, I'll admit that I leave some reflective tacks in the woods, but good luck finding them unless you're really short or looking for them in the dark.

To each their own, but I pick up ribbons and tacks just like beer cans and food wrappers.

I don't have a problem with people leaving ladder stands on public land, provided they don't mind people hunting out of them.
