I have not been reloading all that long, but I know for certain that I have never paid $24 per thousand. Matter of fact I am pretty sure the Remington primers I bought 10 years ago were around $35 per thousand.
No, I never said it was not outrageous. I am not the enemy here, please don't make assumptions about what I think. I merely looked at the cost of primers in the bigger picture and realize it is but one part of what goes into the total cost. It is ridiculous the gouging that is going on and how other members of the shooting community are taking advantage.
One lb imr 4895 will yield roughly 320 rds @24.8 grs, cost I last paid for imr 4895 was $24.99 with shipping and haz mat fees was probably around $30, so say what 10 cents a round into powder?
Bullets per 1000, I paid I think $89 for 55 grain soft points. 9 cents per rd. Find them now for that.
Primers now at $124 per 1000, so 12.4 cents per rd versus 3.5 cents per rd. So I would be paying 9 cents per rd more to have it and KNOW I have it, IF I were to buy them at that price.
So the question I asked to you was is it worth it to you to take the risk OF NOT having versus paying a little more a round. For me the answer is simple. I will eat a little more to know I will have it for my kids for the future. At no more than 9 additional cents a round it is not going to break me.
