I broke the ice with my first Osceola of the season this morning. Very pretty morning, it started out clear and had two gobblers come out behind ten to fifteen hens. That group answered my calls but headed north in the pasture. Later I have a lone gobbler come out about 220 yards away and I started using a box call and he cut the distance in half and a heavy fog moved in and I could not see him anymore. After the fog move in several gobblers got very vocal; I believe that they could no longer see the hens because of the fog and they were trying to locate them. The gobbler in front of me was still talking and I had a good gobble from the north and when I called again he was coming and a lot closer. I called one more time and I saw him running down the fence line. I waited for him to get behind a tree and I put the call down and pointed the shotgun to an open spot and he stop when he spot the Dave Smith hen and stretched his neck out and ease closer to the decoy. He stepped into the open spot and he went down hard. It is not the biggest Osceola I have killed but a respectable one. It had a 9 beard, the right and left spurs were 1 1/16 and the weight was 19lbs, 12ozs.
