So I'm going to be picking up a Browning X bolt 300 win mag in a few weeks but not sure which scope to go with. I'll primarily be using it for big game hunting but would like to do some long range shooting as well. I'm wondering what scope you all would recommend? I'm looking to try and stay under $800 or so.

Looks like VX-3HD 6.5-20x40 is as much power as you can go on a Leupold and stay with your budget. Tax will put you over on it unless you find it on sale. :)

I have a 6.5-20x40 VX-III LR thats over 15 years old and it's the fastest scope I have as far as being able to focus on a target.

Good luck with whatever you get.

I can get this one for $575 plus tax and shipping. I was already looking at it when you recommended it. Leaning towards it.

I'd be looking at a 3-15 ish scope. The only one I have experience with in that range is the swfa Gen 1. A friend has two that we have used a bunch from close to 1k. I use the fixed 6x's and 12x's.

I had a 6.5-20 Leupold years ago and moved it along, not my cup of tea and it wouldn't return to zero.
