This buck showed up at my place back on Oct 20th, subsequently pushed off every other buck that was 3.5 or older from the plot and nearby bedding area. I wanted him gone ASAP before he could do too much damage, so sent friends in after him as a cull buck 4 times 2nd weekend of ML, but he no showed.
I went to the spot for my first sit Nov 12th and he came out at the end of the field 250y away at 330p. I recognized him immediately from all the scarring on his back, but he had broken off the end of his beam on the right. I didn't really want to kill him myself, but he came charging all the way to the stand to fight a 2.5yo buck feeding under me. Shot him at 50y.
I thought he was 6.5, but he is really only 4.5 or 5.5... only weighed 186lbs... very underweight for my mature bucks.
Just got around to doing the euro mount, and while skinning the head, I hit an old caseated granuloma from some type of prior infection just index the left mandible. The pus had become concrete within, and smelled like death. After skinning the entire head, I found his left mandible was actually broken.
After boiling the skull, not only was the jaw broken, but there was substantial bone missing, and substantial bone remodeling of the jaw, indicating the wound was at least a year old.
So... all this buck wanted to do in life was make life miserable for every other buck in the area WHILE he had a broken jaw for over a year. Just crazy.
Extra jawbone in the one pic is from a 4.5yo for reference.
