I predict and will be happy at 7-6, anything better will be icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. I'm hesitant to predict them 9 wins as they're still young and as we saw last year, even with a deep receiver pool things happen.
I'm actually upbeat vs GA and FL. We've had our chances the last several years with an inferior team. Especially vs GA, talent wise they've been much better and but for about 3 plays at the end of the game each of the last few years TN would have won.
Seven wins may be too low with the improvements this team will have, but to my wife's dismay I'm a pessimist at heart.
Overall, they'll be a much better team if just the o-line steps up. They were so close in several games last year and if the o-line can get things going getting a few extra first downs and keeping the other team off the field as much as possible as well as giving the defense a breather. The defense has been very good over the years...in the first half, it's been in the second half that the better teams have pulled away (AL, OK, etc.) and that all goes back to the offense (read o-line) going 3-and-out way to much.
That is a very reasonable and rational viewpoint.
I'm not a Vol fan, but maybe I'm being swayed by all the hype and Butch love. When all that's been won are recruiting battles, it's easy to get caught up in all of that. On the other thread, mtn cur made a very good point about Bielema and Arkansas in his year 2. Vol fans are sounding like Obama supporters blaming George Bush.
Here's why I think 8-5 should be unacceptable. Again, this is measured against all the hype and Butch love that we see on this board almost everyday. 8-5 means either 7-5 regular season and bowl victory (i.e., a one win improvement :bore: ) or 8-4 and a bowl loss (depending on the bowl and the team beating the Vols, that might be an acceptable 8-5 season). I first ask, how in the world do the Vols win the SEC East by going either 7-5 or 8-4 in the regular season? Second, let's just assume that 5 of those victories are the so-called locks - Bowling Green (Vol players better not be sleeping on the Falcons after hearing how great they are all year), Western Carolina, North Texas State (the annual SEC November game against an FCS opponent that doesn't count towards bowl eligibility), Kentucky (in Lexington and they are also getting better), and Vandy (I assume a win only because it's in Knoxville, as Vandy was horrible last year, the Vols only managed a one touchdown win, and Vandy also should be improved). A 7 or 8 win regular season means a losing record against the other 7 teams: Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Missouri. The Vols could more easily go 1-6 than 6-1 against these 7, but I think they have to go at least 4-3 for the season to be considered a success. Otherwise, Butch isn't making any progress versus the teams against which his Vol team should be measured if the hype is at all true. They should beat SC in Knoxville, but other than that, even UF in Gainesville is no lock. No way.
